902_05_12516058highres Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History.No. 17.?La Femme Sauvage, Algiers.?About three or four miles from the Place du Governement, along the main road in the direction of Ilusscin Doy, we come to what is called La Femme Sauvage. This is really an Arab roadside inn, a temporary halting-place for those Arabs whose occupation it is to bring supplies of various kinds to Algiers. The inn is beautifully sheltered from the glare of a semi-tropical sun, at the back, by a rapidly-rising hillside, and at the sides by a profu¬sion of the fresh green of the banana trees. At this inn often during the daytime groups of Arabs may be seen sipping cool drinks, playing at cards [B], or lying quietly asleep beneath the grateful shade of the surrounding trees.

The Beauties of Venice. No. 29.-Fish Market. This, like our last, is thoroughly Venetian in character. It is a view of a group of fish-sellers taken in the ' Pescheria,' or fish market, adjoining the vegetable market. The Pescheria during the morning always presents a lively scene, and especially so on Fridays, which is market day. Fish of every description may here be purchased, and to many visitors it is of some interest to see what a remarkable variety of fish is exposed for sale on the stalls close by. This, like the vegetable market, is a favourite rendezvous of artists, who are sure to find something novel and artistic [B] amongst the vendors of fish, who frequent this quarter at all times of the day.

The European visitor to Algiers can frequently obtain admis¬sion to the houses of the native gentry (of which there are still remnants, as in other lands where the white man has deposed the black), and nothing in connection with these villas strikes them more pleasantly that what is known as the court. Here the coolness so necessary to a tropical climate is alone to be found, and here amidst marble columns, fountains, and broad-leaved plants, the master of the place spends the greater part of his day, and here he also invariably receives bis guests, especially if they are strangers, as such visitors are rarely allowed to enter the private portions of the house. The accompanying view shows us a picture of one of the best of these courts .

It is of course to the suburbs of this populous city that visitors, who come for the warmth and soft air of Algiers, resort, and in them are dotted about the charming little villas in which the genial winter is passed away. These villas are generally situated as near the seashore as possible, in what is known as the Marengo Gardens?which owe their existence to the late emperor's love of improvement; and these gardens are adorned with, in some cases, vineyards, and in others with orange, lemon, myrtle, and olive groves. Behind them rises a sheltering hill, which protects them from the fierce siroccos that blow from the interior of the vast continent, and on the hill stands the Cathedral of Notre Dame de l'Afrique.

This is a portion of Yaletta, principally inhabited by the natives, if people can be called natives who have in their veins the blood of half the Southern races of Europe. The houses here are built of the rocky soil of the island?which is itself but one large rock?and the cultivation of some parts of it (which has been brought to great perfection by continous efforts) is remarkable, when it is remembered what difficulties have to be contended with. On this barren soil all kinds of fruit?including the well-known Maltese orange?are now grown as well as corn and hay.

TO those who have never seen a tropical garden, the view of these palms will convey some idea both of their beauty and grandeur. In this present garden of which we are now speaking they are tended with a considerable amount of care, and, although it once formed only a jungle, modern improvements have turned the place into a delightful resort. Under the leaves of the cactus tree which shelter themselves beneath what the poet has termed tlie fronded and stately palms, a refuge from the sun may he obtained on the warmest day (of course of winter!), and [B] one may sit in perfect ease and coolness.

The beautiful little island of Capri lies off Sorrento in the Bay of Naples, and is one of the chief excursions from that city. It first became a place of retirement under Tiberius, and has continued so up to the present time ; its beautiful air and its sea-views recommending it .to persons seeking clolce far niente. It possesses a natural curiosity in the shape of what is known as the ' blue grotto, a cavern entered from a portion of the precipitous cliff shown in the accompanying view, and in which everything, including the water, the rocky sides, and the visitors themselves appear of a deep blue colour, a strange fact of which no explanation is forthcoming. The island [B], which takes its name from Caprese (that of the goats ), was occupied by the English from 1803 to 1808.

With this view we come upon the full life of Nice herself, as we see before us the conclusion of tlie Promenade des Anglais and the celebrated Jardin Anglais itself, where people congregate to gossip, in the mornings and afternoons, over the events of the past evening, to narrate what happened at such and such a ball, which of their friends were successful or unsuccessful at Monte Carlo last night, what new flirtations have sprung up, and to tell each other about their different maladies and disorders. The day life in Nice is so essentially an out-of- door one that the Jardin Anglais forms one of the most important factors in that life and, without it to resort to, Nice would lose half her charms;

In the Pass of Aberglaslyn.?This Pass ranks second to that of Llanberis, and is famous for its remarkable and romantic scenery. Just at this point we appear to be quite shut in with the road and river, and cannot help feeling awed at the grandeur which extends above and on either side of us ; so much so, that our friend, seated on the wall there, is evidently at a loss what to do, whether to go on and lose himself in further admira¬tion, or to go back and forfeit the pleasure.

A tour of North Wales. 29 Llanberis Pass, from Pont-y-Cromlech ?A little higher up, and we are tempted to declare that this is certainly the wildest and most awe-inspiring spot we have ever been in. What lonely magnificence stretches around ! Each sight how sublime ; and how awful each sound ! All hushed and serene, as a region of dreams, The mountains repose 'mid the roar of the streams. On our left is a tremendous piece of rock, known as the Cromlech, which has been thrown down from the side of Glyder Fawr. From a little bridge here we get this view looking down the Pass, and also a better idea of the wildness of the glen, with its almost perpendicular sides. A little further the summit of the Pass is reached, which is appropriately named Gorphwysfa, i.e., the resting place. From here the finest ascent of Snowdon is made.
