alb9530506 A candlestick, in elevation, resting on upper and lower pedestals. The lower pedestal, supported by lion's feet, is flanked by terminal, winged, caryatid cherubim (or seraphim) perching on curling volutes; in between is a central panel depicting a scene of sacrifice (a figure with arms outstretched is between two standing figures flanking a bull (?) splayed on the altar). Between the lion's paws at the base (on the lowest rectangular block), there is a scalloped lunette with an urn at its center, from which hang paired festoons. At the top of the lowest pedestal, the wings of the addorsed cherubim terminate in a frontal, bald-headed mask with fin-like jowls. These cherubim support the stepped, base molding (scored with a stylus) of the upper pedestal which is flanked by two ram heads, with garlands hanging from their mouths, above two animal masks. Two cinerary urns in niches decorate the upper pedestal's central panel. Atop the two-tiered pedestals, the upper candlestick shaft consists of a vase surmounted by an urn and another upper section. A baluster crowns the shaft. Faintly sketched are six branches (three on either side of the upper shaft) to suggest an overall seven-branched candlestick design. At the lower right, two plan sketches with numbers ("8" and "5") indicating, probably, the size of the marble block needed to carve the corresponding sections of the candelabrum (as Sir Timothy Clifford has called it); the numbers correspond to others on the more finished drawing. Some believe the design might have been intended to be realized in metal. Black chalk, brush and brown wash, incised lines and compass points on cream laid paper, lined. Date: 1520-30. Museum: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

alb3676501 Tutte l'opere d'architettura. Author: Sebastiano Serlio (Italian, Bologna 1475-1554 Fontainebleau). Dimensions: Book: 9 3/4 × 7 3/16 × 2 9/16 in. (24.8 × 18.2 × 6.5 cm)Sheet: 9 9/16 x 6 7/8 in. (24.3 x 17.5 cm). Published in: Venice. Publisher: Francesco de' Franceschi (Italian, active 16th century). Date: 1584.As the first practical and fully illustrated "handbook" of architecture including plans and elevations, Serlio's work, begun in 1537 and published book by book, had a profound impact on the development of Renaissance architecture. In the seventh book, on "Miscellenea" or "Accidenti" (1584), containing a section on villas, Serlio divided his designs into buildings in the city and those in the countryside. Unlike Palladio, he offered different designs for private dwellings distinguishing between various socioeconomic levels in society, a principle worked out in further detail in his unpublished sixth book on domestic architecture (the completed manuscript of which is kept in the Avery Library at Columbia University, New York). Libro Estraordinaria, p. 17, Rustic Gate, "Questa porta rien del Dorico del Corinthio, del Rustico...":Serlio's Libro estraordinario, the sixth book in this first edition of his complete works, deals with the design of gateways. His model for a dramatic rustic gate on Page 17 of Book 6 is quite unusual in that it breaks all the rules of classical architecture, including the order of columns and principles of decoration. Inspired by the often eccentric designs of contemporary Mannerist architecture, Serlio combined rough elements with the more traditional treatment of the Doric order to stress the difference between nature and artifice. Entirely appropriate to the entry of a villa-park, his gate is designed in a heavy rustic manner with a touch of brutishness, which Serlio called bestiale, underlined by the bulls' heads set in the cornerstones of the archway.Libro VII, p. 47, "Della undecima casa fuori della città Capitolo XIX.":The print on Page 47 of Book 6 depicts Serlio's project for a "casa fuori della città" or villa for the wealthy patron on the outskirts of the city. The villa has a perfect square plan with a large courtyard at the center and in front. The villa's front elevation, shown here, consists of an open gallery flanked by pavilions. Serlio specifically stressed the importance of open loggias instead of closed facades in houses "alla campagna," since they provide easy access to the outdoors and delightful prospects of the natural surroundings. alb3671182 Plate for the 'Atlas Anatomico' (unpublished). Artist: Crisóstomo Alejandrino José Martínez y Sorli (Spanish, Valencia 1628-1694). Dimensions: Plate: 26 7/16 × 20 3/4 in. (67.1 × 52.7 cm)Sheet: 27 7/16 x 21 9/16 in. (69.7 x 54.7 cm). Date: Plate ca. 1680-1694; printed 18th century.Architectural view of a square with pedestals and obelisks. The composition is divided in two halves, with on the top half 14 human figures in various poses, depicted in outline with an emphasis on their skeletal structure. Twelve figures have been numbered A through M in capital letters. In the foreground, depicted on the bottom half of the sheet, various different bones from the human body are depicted leaning against and lying on the pedestals. Each is depicted multiple times to show the front and back as well as the section of the bone to reveal its internal structure. All are numbered with lower case letters a-z and numbers 1-12. In the center of the composition, a drawing is hung in front of the pedestal which shows the top half of the cranium held in front of a burning candle to reveal the seams and what looks like a fracture. The Atlas Anatomico as Chrisostomo Martinez y Sorli had planned it, contained the most authoritative anatomical prints made during the seventeenth century. He started the project in Spain in 1680, but moved to Paris where he continued working on it, until he died in 1694 during a trip in his home country. The plates for the book appear to have been left in Paris and were subsequently used to illustrate several 18th-century French publications. The monumental prints illustrate the state of knowledge of anatomy in late seventeenth-century Europe, as well as the incredible level of sophistication that printmaking and book production had reached in Europe at that time. On this page Leonardo outlined in a sagittal and transverse plane the 'cell doctrine' concept. The brain cavity is depicted as an empty space with three balloon-like expansions connected to the eye by dura-like coverings connecting with the posterior component of the eye. Using the onion analogy Leonardo comments on the layers of the scalp, eye and brain coverings. The eye is shown in sagittal section with the traditional spherical lens and the frontal sinus for the first time.

alb3683371 Georgia O'Keeffe--Torso. Artist: Alfred Stieglitz (American, Hoboken, New Jersey 1864-1946 New York). Dimensions: 23.6 x 18.8 cm (9 5/16 x 7 3/8 in.). Date: 1918.This photograph, one of over three hundred images Stieglitz made of O'Keeffe (1887-1986) between 1917 and 1937, is part of an extraordinary composite portrait. Stieglitz believed that portraiture concerned more than merely the face and that it should be a record of a person's life experience, a mosaic of expressive movements, emotions, and gestures that would function collectively to evoke a life. "To demand the portrait that will be a complete portrait of any person," he claimed, "is as futile as to demand that a motion picture be condensed into a single still.". alb3660985 Plan of the Mausoleum of Caecilia Metella, wife of the Triumvir Marcus Crassus..., from Le Antichità Romane (Roman Antiquities), tome 3, tavola 49. Series/Portfolio: Le Antichità Romane, tome 3. Date: published 1756-57.While Piranesi's 'Vedute' record the present appearance of the relics of antiquity, he also dug deeper, investigating the engineering feats of the ancient Romans and attempting to reconstruct the former appearance of the ancient city. His 'Antichità Romane' of 1756, a four-volume work that won him admittance to the British Society of Antiquarians, includes maps of the ancient walls and aqueduct system and a thorough investigation of Roman burial customs. The third volume illustrates the sepulchral monuments of the Via Appia Antica, including six plates devoted to the tomb of Cecilia Metella. In plate 49, Piranesi combines a number of views--an elevation, a plan, a cross-section, details of the masonry construction--to create a handsomely designed and informative page.
