Poggio hat sich vom Bergarbeiter- und Köhlerdorf längst zum ideal gelegenen Luftkurort gewandelt. Schon Napoleon war regelmäßig hier. 1898 portraitierte Elbas Maler Telemacho Signorini (1835 - 1901) das Dorf mehrfach. Ein Jahr später errichtete Adolfo Coppedè hier eine Villa für den Eisenmagnaten Pilade del Buono. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg fanden hier Greta Garbo, der malbegeisterte Winston Churchill oder der in Fiesole bei Florenz lebende italienische surrealistische Maler Giorgio de Chirico Ruhe und Muße. Sie nächtigten damals im Jugendstilhotel "Fonte Napoleone´ - heute ein schlichtes Apartmenthaus. Poggio hat etruskische Ursprünge mindestens bis ins 4. Jh. v. Chr. zurück und wurde noch im Mittelalter Podium Marciane genannt.
