hiphotos571362 "Boy Asleep", sculpture, by Alexander Munro, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1864. 'This most charming, but at the same time most difficult, subject has been treated with rare feeling and delicacy [and] with close adherence to nature. The body and limbs of the child generally express the consentaneous relaxation of sleep. The left arm - with the hand filled with flowers placed across the bosom - is especially happy in its indication of perfect repose. The slight protrusion, too, of the soft cheek, through the pressure of the falling head on the neck and shoulder, has been closely observed and imitated from nature We would invite the reader to observe, also, that Mr. Munro has added to the inherent charm of his subject by the graceful fancy shown in the accessories. He has suggested by the bunch of wild hyacinths (flowers sometimes employed, if we remember rightly, as emblematic of sleep) which the child holds in its chubby hand, and by the soft couch of ferns and flowers on which it lies//

hiphotos568956 The Three Graces, 1872. The Graces, often three in number, were goddesses who represented such qualities as charm, beauty, and creativity. This small bronze is based on a monumental sculpture Carpeaux designed for the exterior of the Palais Garnier, home of the Paris Opera. The bolts on the figures’ limbs indicate that this was a bronze caster’s model, which could be assembled to produce multiple versions of the original. Such models were not intended for display and this one has a roughly finished surface that bears the artist’s tool marks//

hiphotos547627 Engraved Gem Inset Into a Ring, 50-25 B.C. Additional Info: The carved intaglio on the stone of this ring reproduces the head of one of the most famous Greek statues ever made, the Doryphoros by the artist Polykleitos, fashioned about 440 B.C. Polykleitos created this statue to illustrate his aesthetic theories. All of Polykleitos's works were very popular with the Romans in the first centuries B.C. and A.D. Roman artists created huge numbers of replicas and variations of his sculptural work, in addition to reproducing them in other media, as shown here. In Roman society, which placed a high emphasis on display, this ring with its carved intaglio set into a heavy gold ring advertised the wearer's wealth as well as culture and learning//

hiphotos547565 Statue of a Boy with Grapes, first half of 2nd century A.D. Additional Info: The boy sits, looking to the viewer's left, but with his chest and stomach sharply rotated to the front as he turns to protect a cluster of grapes. His left leg lies flat on the ground, flexed at the knee, while the right is partially raised, with only the heel in contact with the base. He holds the fruit close to his chest with his right arm, cradling them with his left. The cluster is rich with grapes, and also has a vine leaf and part of the stem. The boy is missing the tip of his nose and some of his toes, but is otherwise well preserved. His unruly hair, partially tied up in a topknot, is rendered with thick curly strands. He sits on a low base, rounded at the sides, with a protuding rectangular section in front. The back is plain, but the front part has a concave molding with grooves above and below//

hiphotos547365 Tablet (Tabula Iliaca) Inscribed with a Historical Text, A.D. 16-20. Additional Info: Aside from the lower edge and what appear to be the remains of a tenon, no original edge is preserved. The front has a scene in low relief, with three figures on an undulating groundline- a kneeling male holding an object in his left hand and looking into what may have been a grotto; one horse and part of a second with the yoke and part of the wheel of a cart; and the head of a standing male, perhaps a servant holding the horses in the background. Below the groundline, a smooth beveled area with portions of a four line inscription that is broken at both ends (identified by Burstein 1989 as including fragments of three nonconsecutive sentences from a letter of Darius to Alexander, found in the Alexander Romance (2.17)).//

hiphotos547207 Flask, about A.D. 75. Additional Info: Flask of pale green glass blown into a four-part mold. The flask is cylindrical with a long, tapering neck and no rim. The body is decorated in relief with three bacchic figures separated by free-standing columns. They are: Bacchus with a thyrsus and panther; a silenus with a wine skin, and Pan with a shepherd's crook. The vessel is very heavily weathered with a strong purple iridescence. Corrosion has eliminated most of the facial features of the figures//

hiphotos547198 Flask, 1st century A.D. Additional Info: This small mold-blown flask is made of opaque white glass. Its ovoid body is decorated a three-tier design in relief with vessels. The flat base is impressed with concentric circles. The seam marks indicate that this flask was blown in a three-part mold. The cylindrical neck ends with a flaring mouth with a spout. This flask is severely weathered. The flaking surface is covered with iridescence and accretions. The shoulder has been repaired with a large fill//

hiphotos540335 Medal of Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), about 1600. Additional Info: Since antiquity, rulers have minted coins and medals to celebrate their power and dominion. On this gold medal from about 1600, the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II wears a laurel wreath, a sign of victory and peace, and the chain and pendant of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The Latin inscription on the front, "RUDOLPHUS II ROM IMP AUG REX HUNG BOE" , declares Rudolf the Supreme Emperor of the Romans, King of Hungary and Bohemia. On the reverse, a ram, zodiac sign of the constellation Capricorn, refers to Augustus Caesar, who was conceived under this sign, suggesting an analogy between Rudolf and Caesar. The Latin inscription, "ASTRUM FULGET CAES" (The Emperor's Star Shines Brightly), along with the symbols of the twinkling star, the earth, and the Habsburg eagle, suggest Rudolf's supremacy and the prosperous future of the Habsburg dynasty. The emperor's elegant three-quarter pose and the subtle differentiation of//

hiphotos539528 Mummy Mask, A.D. 150-200. Additional Info: The tradition of funerary portraiture in Roman Egypt (1st-3rd centuries AD), famous for its painted portrait panels, also included the production and use of plaster cast portraits. Placed over the faces of the mummies, these nearly-life-size portraits were incorporated into the wrappings before burial. This mask was originally attached to a flat plaster upper chest area and projected slightly upward from the mummy wrappings, giving a three-dimensional aspect to the entire mummy. The portraits are mold-made, but because their religious function was to identify and represent the deceased, they were embellished with specific portrait features. Here, most of the visible original pigment has worn off, but at the time of burial it would have consisted of tinted flesh, pink lips and black hair (with some pigment still visible in the channels of plaster). The sculpted earrings would have been tipped in color and may once have been gilded. The striking eyes are//

hiphotos539526 Cameo;Cameo with a Ptolemaic King and Zeus Ammon, 2nd century B.C. Additional Info: Carved in cameo technique is a double portrait of two heads facing left. The foreground figure in dark stone is a beardless male wearing what resembles a radiate crown. It recalls the spiky crown worn by Roman emperors, but the head does not readily match any known portrait. Carved behind him in white is the head of a bearded male with rugged features resembling a typical depiction of Hercules. The gem has been drilled through lengthwise as though once suspended or mounted//

hiphotos539523 Head of a Man, 325-275 B.C. Additional Info: The male head features a full and rounded face with distinctive features: a hint of a double chin, small sunken eyes set close together, a short, compressed nose, and downturned, fleshy lips. The face is framed by a dense thatch of short, vibrant curls held by a band. The leonine hair recalls portraits of Alexander the Great or the mythical figure Meleager. The head could be either a portrait or a well-characterized type attested in a number of heads of banqueters from the Early Hellenistic period//

hiphotos539519 Bust of Germanicus, A.D. 20-40. Additional Info: The bust depicts the young Germanicus before the depositio barbae, the Roman ritual first shaving of the beard. While the image, or portrait type, was created at the time of his adoption by Tiberius in A.D. 4, this bust is a posthumous portrait of the popular general, who was being groomed to be emperor but died young. Ten copies are known today of Germanicus' Adoption Type portrait, identified by the facial features and careful arrangement of the locks over the forehead. Germanicus (15 B.C.-A.D. 19) was a successful general and immensely popular with both the military and Roman citizenry, yet he never ascended the throne due to his death at the age of 33, five years into Tiberius' reign. Germanicus received extensive posthumous honors and was venerated as Rome's version of Alexander the Great//

hiphotos539517 Head of a Woman, about 320 B.C. Additional Info: The head of a woman, broken at shoulder height, rests on a long, slender neck and turns slightly to the left. Her hair is arranged in a "melon-coiffure"; the hair is plaited into rows that are gathered high and braided in a thick circle around the top of her head. In the center of this circle her wavy hair rests flat against the skull. Her face is oval and subtly modeled, with neat, compact features. Her almond-shaped eyes look towards the left. There are two Venus rings indicated on her neck. The ears are drilled with holes for earrings. Her nose, mouth, and chin have some losses//
DC
hiphotos539516 Bust of a Woman, about A.D. 130. Additional Info: This portrait was long believed to represent Sabina (A.D. 83-137), wife of the emperor Hadrian. Distinctive features such as the protruding ears make this identification doubtful. Her hair is fastened in a loose bun typically worn by Greek goddesses. This gives the anonymous sitter the appearance of Classical statuary, a conceit enhanced by the diadem//

hiphotos539515 Votive Head of a Young Man, 200-150 B.C. Additional Info: This hollow votive head is reconstructed from many fragments and several pieces are missing. On both the left and right side of the face, large triangular gaps occur from the lower jaw to the temples; the lower parts of both ears are also missing. Absent too are pieces from the lower left cheek as well as pieces from the top and back of the head. A small gap in the face has also been filled in. The face itself shows a young man with his hair brushed low onto his forehead in short wavy locks. The back of the head is modeled less carefully than the front with the hair indicated by long shallow grooves radiating from a central point//

hiphotos539513 Fragmentary Winged Lion, 6th century B.C. Additional Info: Upper part of figure preserved, including the head, shoulder and much of the wings. Some embellishment (incised lines to mark the wings and on the muzzle) on the surface, but much is worn. The lion's mouth is open, and a number of the teeth preserved. The wings curl back to form an open circle above the back//

hiphotos539514 Herm of an Athletic Youth, 2nd century A.D.. Additional Info: Originally belonging to a herm, this bust represents a young, beardless male wearing a headband, the ends of which fall forward over his shoulders. His facial features are markedly asymmetrical, and engraved lines indicate his pupils. The young man has short, curly hair and his ears seem swollen, a motif which perhaps indicates that he is an athlete//

hiphotos539512 Imitation of a Roman Male Portrait, 1900. Additional Info: This head of a male is a modern imitation, perhaps intended as restoration for a Roman relief (ca. 1900). hiphotos539510 Satyr with Sokrates' Features, early 4th century B.C. Additional Info: A solid bronze statuette of a satyr. Most of both forearms, the left leg at mid-thigh, the right leg below the knee, and the tail are missing. The figure stands with his weight on his right leg and has a slight paunch. Evidence of the tail remains on the lower back and right buttock. The facial characteristics are similar to those of known portraits of Sokrates and include a bald, round head; a long, curly beard; and a flat, broad nose//

hiphotos539511 Head of Ptolemy III, 246-222 B.C. Additional Info: Head of a small statuette portraying Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-221 B.C) in the manner accustomed for Alexander the Great-beardless, short haired and with the head rotated to the side and a slightly upraised chin. Twelve holes are visible around the hairline for the fitting of a diadem//

hiphotos539509 Portrait of Hephaistion; Head of a Youth, about 320 B.C. Additional Info: The son of a noble Macedonian family, Hephaistion was the beloved companion of Alexander the Great. Together since boyhood, Hephaistion fought alongside Alexander as he created his great empire. When Hephaistion died in Persia in 324 B.C., Alexander mourned him extravagantly. He was given a royal funeral and Alexander ordered the cities of Greece to worship Hephaistion as a hero. This head of Hephaistion, broken from a full-length statue, was originally part of a multi-figured group, which might have depicted a sacrificial scene//

hiphotos539508 Head of a Ptolemy, 2nd century B.C. Additional Info: Head of a Ptolemy;Head of Ptolemy IX. The head is approximately life-size and is preserved with a small bust for insertion into a statue. Some drapery is preserved at the left shoulder and there is a square dowel hole on the underside of the bust. The head turns and leans to its left. Part of lower lip, much of the nose, and a lock of hair over the forehead are broken off. The eyes and upper lip also sustain some damage. The rest of the head is quite well preserved, with much of the surface only lightly chipped and unweathered. The back of the head and hair are missing and would have been added in stucco. Diagonal grooves are cut into the back of the head and the underside of the bust. The hair around the forehead is mostly an unarticulated mass with some ill-defined locks at the hairline, where it is cut short and square across the forehead//

hiphotos539507 Head of a Priest or Saint, about A.D. 400. Additional Info: With his piercing gaze, the man represented in this Late Antique sculpture may have been a priest or a saint. The man's forehead creases in soft furrows, his hair and beard fall in uniform waves, and his thin lips are pressed tightly shut. The unknown sculptor has rendered the ears in a simple fashion without any inner elements. And the pupils of the eyes are drilled out in deep, rough circles. These stylistic features link the sculpture with works produced in Constantinople in the early 400s. The sculpture represents the transition from Late Antique to Byzantine art//

hiphotos539506 Head of a Statue of a Hellenistic Ruler, 3rd century B.C. Additional Info: Over life-sized head of a Hellenistic ruler, broken off from a statue. The chin, upper lip, nose, and right forehead are broken off. The lower lip is partially preserved. The surface is weathered, especially on the right side. There are two sets of cuttings for attributes: 1) ten small dowel holes around the head and, 2) two large square holes cut in the temples. The cavities and the holes indicate two phases of representation. The head originally had fuller marble hair with some type of wreath or diadem attached by iron dowels in the smaller holes. In the second version, the wreath or diadem was taken off and the dowels removed, except for two at the back, which were broken or cut off in their holes. The hair was then cut back all over to take a type of headdress with large horns secured in the temple cavities. The headdress could have consisted or a helmet with bull horns or an elephant-scalp with tusks. The portrait is//

hiphotos539503 Portrait of a Bearded Man, about 150 B.C. Additional Info: An older man with a short beard confronts the viewer with an intense gaze and furrowed brow. The head belongs to a larger category of portraiture that arose in the wake of Alexander the Great: portraits of Hellenistic rulers. Designed as propaganda to legitimize the ruler and emphasize dynastic connections, these portraits are often highly idealized images of their subjects, bearing an intentional similarity to each other. Yet, with the bump in his nose, his square jaw, and the folds between his cheek and mouth, this portrait captures this man's individuality. This head is all that remains of a larger than life-size, full-length portrait statue. The scale of the work implies that it was a public monument rather than a private commission. Sculptors in the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon frequently used such grayish marble. Since the figure does not wear a diadem, he cannot have been a ruler when the statue was erected. Yet, his scale and regal//

hiphotos539504 Head of Ptolemy IV?, 246-222 B.C. Additional Info: The face is round, but the features are small and compact. The head is flat at the top with a diadem indicated by a thick, raised ridge. Where the knot of the diadem should be is a large chunk of marble that extends down the back of the neck. The hair is swept forward from under the diadem. The top and back of the head are only roughly worked and the right side of the neck shows rasp marks. At the apex of the forehead, a large chunk of marble has broken off. Sculpted from a gray, medium grained marble, the head is heavily weathered. Only the right side is in good condition; the left side is heavily incrusted//

hiphotos539502 Portrait of Alexander the Great, about 320 B.C. Additional Info: Identified by his mass of leonine hair, his young idealized face, and his deep-set, upturned eyes, Alexander the Great was the first Greek ruler to understand and exploit the propagandistic powers of portraiture. Ancient literary sources say that he let only one sculptor carve his portrait: Lysippos (active ca. 370-300 B.C.), who created the standard Alexander portrait type. This life-size head, said to have been found in Megara, was part of a multi-figured group, which probably served as a funerary monument for a courtier who wanted to associate himself with the ruler. The Getty Museum has over thirty fragments of this group, which might have depicted a sacrificial scene. The participants include Alexander, his companion Hephaistion, a goddess, Herakles, a flute player, and several other figures, as well as animals and birds. The head was re-carved in antiquity. The left ear was added, the right sideburn shortened, and the lower eyelids//
