Date: 1867.Monet spent the summer of 1867 with his family at Sainte-Adresse, a seaside resort near Le Havre. It was there that he painted this buoyant, sunlit scene of contemporary leisure, enlisting his father (shown seated in a panama hat) and other relatives as models. By adopting an elevated viewpoint and painting the terrace, sea, and sky as three distinct bands of high-keyed color, Monet emphasized the flat surface of the canvas. His approach--daring for its time--reflects his admiration for Japanese prints. Twelve years after it was made, Monet exhibited the picture at the fourth Impressionist exhibition of 1879 as Jardin à Sainte-Adresse. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3651218 July Fourteenth, Rue Daunou, 1910. Artist: Childe Hassam (American, Dorchester, Massachusetts 1859-1935 East Hampton, New York). Dimensions: 29 1/8 x 19 7/8 in. (74 x 50.5 cm). Date: 1910.On July 21, 1910, Hassam wrote to the artist J. Alden Weir that he had been in Paris for two weeks and found it dirty and noisy. He added, "I have made a 14th July from the balcony here"-- evidently referring to this painting, which depicts the street below the Hôtel l'Empire (located at 7, rue Daunou, near the Opéra) during Bastille Day celebrations. For Hassam, the holiday would have recalled the Fourth of July, perhaps prompting him to exaggerate the number of American flags displayed. The canvas anticipates the Flag series Hassam began in New York six years later, which included "Avenue of the Allies, Great Britain, 1918" (67.187.127). alb3648807 The Constitution and the Guerriere. Artist: Thomas Chambers (1808-after 1866). Dimensions: 24 3/4 x 31 1/4 in. (62.9 x 79.4 cm). Date: ca. 1845.Born in England, Chambers worked in the United States as a prolific marine, landscape, and "fancy" painter between 1832 and about 1866. In the 1930s and 1940s, with the discovery of the Museum's signed painting, Chambers emerged as a folk original, embraced posthumously by modern art enthusiasts as the "American Rousseau." Here, Chambers focused his attention on a well-known marine battle in the War of 1812 featuring the U.S.S. Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides. Basing his composition on an engraving by Cornelius Tiebout after a painting by Thomas Birch, he took certain liberties with his source, advancing the action and showing the British ship, H.M.S. Guerrière, with all its masts broken. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3682168 The Vision of Ezekiel; a group of corpses and skeletons emerging out of tombs, above them five winged putti holding a banderole. Artist: Giorgio Ghisi (Italian, Mantua ca. 1520-1582 Mantua); After Giovanni Battista Bertano (Mantua 1516-1576 Mantua). Dimensions: Plate: 16 1/8 x 26 1/2 in. (41 x 67.3 cm)Sheet: 16 13/16 x 26 1/2 in. (42.7 x 67.3 cm). Date: 1554.Large and dramatic, this engraving depicts the prophet Ezekiel's vision in the Valley of the Dead when he saw vast numbers of the people brought back to life. As recorded in the Book of Ezekiel from the Old Testament, the prophet was brought to a valley filled with dry bones and commanded to prophesize over them. As he did so, 'there was a noise, a sound of clattering; and the bones joined together. I looked, and saw that they were covered with sinews; flesh was growing on them and skin was covering them .' (Ezekiel 37:7-8). The Biblical passage is represented here with great imagination. Set in a darkened valley the bones appear to be organizing themselves, joining up to form animated skeletons, and gradually taking on flesh. At either side of the print are sealed tombs and between them others from which skeletons emerge. The tomb at the right with female figures at each corner seems to have been inspired by the tomb designed by Giulio Romano (ca 1529) for Pietro Strozzi in the basilica of S. Andrea in Mantua. The designer of the print, Giovanni Battista Bertani, was from Mantua and a pupil of Romano. This is an early proof impression of the print before an inscription was added to the banderole held by putti in the upper section. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
