20250322_shc_z03_157 March 22, 2025 - Mississippi, USA - DETAIL: On March 13, an expansive upper-level trough moved into the U.S. High Plains, Upper Midwest, and Midwest and began colliding with warm, moist air over the Mississippi Valley. The interaction helped fuel a major storm system that spread severe thunderstorms across several states. Many of these were supercells, a type of long-lived storm with a powerful rotating updraft. These storms often generate destructive tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds. Assessments of the damage by the National Weather Service led them to assign the event an EF-4 rating, making this one of the strongest tornadoes of the outbreak. They estimated peak winds of 170 miles (274 kilometers) per hour in some areas. On March 22, 2025, show a lengthy damage track extending roughly 55 miles (90 kilometers), from near Progress in the southwestern part of the state toward Williamsburg. 20250314_shc_z03_836 March 14, 2025 - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - The phases of the lunar eclipse are visible in this time-lapse image of the Moon above the Space Environments Complex at NASA's Glenn Research Center at NASA's Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, OH on March 14, 2025. Toward the middle of the Moon's track through the sky, it appears red Ð this is the Blood Moon. One meaning of a "Blood Moon" is based on its red glow. This blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth lines up between the Moon and the Sun, hiding the Moon from sunlight. When this happens, the only light that reaches the Moon's surface is from the edges of the Earth's atmosphere. The air molecules from Earth's atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the Moon's surface with a red glow, making the Moon appear red in the night sky. (Credit Image: © Sara Lowthian-HannaNASA/ZUMA Press Wire)

20250130_shc_z03_155 January 30, 2025 - India - From the Mojave to the Thar, the abundance of sunlight and open space in the planet's deserts has long made them favorable places to build solar farms. But the geometric arrays can be constructed elsewhere, even atop lakes and reservoirs. Like their land-based counterparts, the buoyant power parks are sometimes large enough to be seen from space. This pair of images shows the development of floating solar power arrays on a reservoir of the Narmada River in central India. The right image shows the reservoir on January 30, 2025. For comparison, the left image shows the same area on February 10, 2023, during an earlier stage of the project. 20250128_shc_z03_921 January 28, 2025 - Australia - DETAIL: In its seasonal bushfire outlook, Australia's national council for fire and emergency services warned that severe rainfall deficits spanning 18 months had caused a substantial amount of dead and dry plant material to accumulate in Victoria's forests, making it easier for fires to start and spread. In January 2025, the warning became reality in the southeastern Australian state as bushfires raged in Grampians National Park and Little Desert National Park amid hot, dry, and windy conditions. The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of smoke streaming from bushfires burning through parts of the two national parks on January 28, 2025. Larger than Germany, the thin strip of habitable land hugging its circumfrence supports a popultion of only 56,421 (2021). With a per capita GDP at a largely subsistance level, the territory receives subsidies from Denmark and also from the European Union, even though it is not a member state. At the same time, it's estimated that Greenland has huge untapped natural resources in the form of rare earth metals, nickel, gold, diamonds, iron, graphite, uranium, copper, along with oil. It's a fitting name for the perpetually puffing and occasionally explosive stratovolcano offshore from North Island. The volcano's name is a combination of Te Puia o Whakaari (a Maori phrase for dramatic volcano) and White Island, which the British explorer James Cook started calling the feature in 1769 after noticing that it puffed steam almost continuously. 20241130_shc_z03_120 November 30, 2024 - Florida, Argentina - In austral spring 2024, a phytoplankton bloom off the coast of Argentina painted the waters blue and green. Blooms are common in the region this time of year, but clouds often block the view from above. However, clouds stayed hundreds of kilometers offshore on November 30, 2024, allowing the OCI (Ocean Color Instrument) on NASA's PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite to capture this image of the colorful bloom in the South Atlantic Ocean. Phytoplankton are among the smallest organisms in the ocean. But when their populations explode, the blooms can span thousands of square kilometers, making them visible from space. In this scene, the bloom stretches east to west over the Patagonian Shelf and extends over 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) north from the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas).
