alb3670134 Venus and Cupid. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: Diameter 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm). Date: ca. 1525-27.Cranach often treated the theme of Venus and Cupid, but this excellently preserved panel is the only version in a round format. Playing coquettishly with her veil and glancing at the viewer, Venus ignores Cupid, who is agitated by the situation. His arrow is missing, suggesting that he has been disarmed and is powerless against his mother. The picture was likely intended for display in a personal studiolo. Cranach might have painted the roundel not on commission but on speculation, to be sold to discerning collectors already conditioned by the tradition of medals and plaquettes to appreciate such refined work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601378 Venus and Adonis. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 42 x 52 1/2 in. (106.7 x 133.4 cm). Date: 1560s.Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing--correctly--that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus from the back, enhances the viewer's sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titian's workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio).

alb3599874 The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche. Artist: Andrea Schiavone (Andrea Meldola) (Italian, Zadar (Zara) ca. 1510?-1563 Venice). Dimensions: Overall, with corners made up, 51 1/2 x 61 7/8 in. (130.8 x 157.2 cm); painted surface 50 1/2 x 61 1/2 in. (128.3 x 156.2 cm). Date: ca. 1550.The painting represents the marriage of Cupid, the son of Venus, with the mortal Psyche, in the presence of Juno, Jupiter, Mars, and other gods of Olympus as narrated by Apuleius in The Golden Ass. Originally an octagon (the four corners are additions), it was the central panel of a ceiling with scenes from the legend of Psyche painted by Schiavone in about 1550 for the Castello di Salvatore di Collalto, in the hills to the north of Venice. Schiavone's fluid and painterly style and the exaggerated proportions of his figures were inspired by Parmigianino and were in turn important to a younger generation of painters such as Tintoretto. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3669064 Mars and Venus United by Love. Artist: Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari) (Italian, Verona 1528-1588 Venice). Dimensions: 81 x 63 3/8 in. (205.7 x 161 cm). Date: 1570s.In this visually opulent and sensual painting, Cupid binds Mars (the god of war) to Venus with a love knot. It celebrates the civilizing and nurturing effects of love, as milk flows from Venus's breast and Mars's warhorse is restrained. By 1621 the painting was owned by Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, along with other mythological works by the artist (two are in the Frick Collection, New York), but its original owner is unknown. A masterpiece of light and color, works such as this had an enduring impact on later artists including Velázquez and Giambattista Tiepolo. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(8.9 cm) at top. This painting appears to depict the birth of Cupid, with attendants ministering to his mother, Venus. The lively, decorative composition is typical of French artists working in the style developed by the Italians at the château de Fontainebleau, such as Rosso Fiorentino of Florence and Primaticcio and Niccolo dell Abate of Bologna.
