alb3527484 Connoisseurs, June 20, 1799, Hand-colored etching, Sheet: 10 11/16 × 8 7/16 in. (27.2 × 21.4 cm), Prints, Thomas Rowlandson (British, London 1757–1827 London), Rowlandson here directs his visual wit against a group of elderly art enthusiasts who lean in appreciatively to examine a painting of Venus and Cupid. Their lecherous expressions, the voluptuous subject before them, and the biblical scene of Susanna and the elders on the wall behind all suggest that their devotion to art does not arise out of aesthetic appreciation alone.

alb3682937 The Birth of Venus. Artist: Alexandre Cabanel (French, Montpellier 1823-1889 Paris). Dimensions: 41 3/4 x 71 7/8 in. (106 x 182.6 cm). Date: 1875.The first version of Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) created a sensation at the Salon of 1863, which was dubbed the "Salon of the Venuses" owing to the number of alluring nudes on view. Embodying the ideals of academic art, the careful modeling, silky brushwork, and mythological subject of Cabanel's canvas proved a winning combination: the Salon picture was purchased by no less than Napoleon III for his personal collection. In 1875, John Wolfe commissioned the present, slightly smaller, replica from Cabanel. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601378 Venus and Adonis. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 42 x 52 1/2 in. (106.7 x 133.4 cm). Date: 1560s.Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing--correctly--that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus from the back, enhances the viewer's sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titian's workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601530 Venus and Cupid. Artist: Lorenzo Lotto (Italian, Venice ca. 1480-1556 Loreto). Dimensions: 36 3/8 x 43 7/8 in. (92.4 x 111.4 cm). Date: 1520s.Lotto, whose unusual genius makes him one of the most fascinating of all Venetian painters, depicts Venus and her son Cupid in a bower, a subject inspired by ancient marriage poems. He probably painted it to celebrate the wedding of a cultivated couple in Venice or Bergamo, and Venus's features may be taken from the bride's. The beautifully observed details relate to the goddess and marriage. The ivy is symbolic of fidelity, the bride wore a myrtle wreath, and Cupid peeing is a lighthearted augury of fertility. alb3670134 Venus and Cupid. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: Diameter 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm). Date: ca. 1525-27.Cranach often treated the theme of Venus and Cupid, but this excellently preserved panel is the only version in a round format. Playing coquettishly with her veil and glancing at the viewer, Venus ignores Cupid, who is agitated by the situation. His arrow is missing, suggesting that he has been disarmed and is powerless against his mother. The picture was likely intended for display in a personal studiolo. Cranach might have painted the roundel not on commission but on speculation, to be sold to discerning collectors already conditioned by the tradition of medals and plaquettes to appreciate such refined work. Date: 1751.Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, admired Boucher and was his patroness from 1747 until her death in 1764. This famous work was commissioned for the dressing room at Bellevue, her château near Paris. The bodies of the goddess and her cupids are soft, supple, and blond. alb3599874 The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche. Artist: Andrea Schiavone (Andrea Meldola) (Italian, Zadar (Zara) ca. 1510?-1563 Venice). Dimensions: Overall, with corners made up, 51 1/2 x 61 7/8 in. (130.8 x 157.2 cm); painted surface 50 1/2 x 61 1/2 in. (128.3 x 156.2 cm). Date: ca. 1550.The painting represents the marriage of Cupid, the son of Venus, with the mortal Psyche, in the presence of Juno, Jupiter, Mars, and other gods of Olympus as narrated by Apuleius in The Golden Ass. Originally an octagon (the four corners are additions), it was the central panel of a ceiling with scenes from the legend of Psyche painted by Schiavone in about 1550 for the Castello di Salvatore di Collalto, in the hills to the north of Venice. Schiavone's fluid and painterly style and the exaggerated proportions of his figures were inspired by Parmigianino and were in turn important to a younger generation of painters such as Tintoretto. alb3610866 Venus and the Lute Player. Artist: Titian (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice) and Workshop. Dimensions: 65 x 82 1/2 in. (165.1 x 209.6 cm). Date: ca. 1565-70.Titian and his workshop painted the theme of Venus and a musician in multiple versions during the latter part of his career. Venus's contours would be transferred to a new canvas and laid in by the workshop, varying the composition. In this majestic example, Titian fully painted the landscape as well as attended to the flesh tones of Venus, but other parts, such as the viol, remained unfinished. These paintings celebrate the coming together of love and music, but they may also allude to contemporary debates concerning "seeing" versus "hearing" as the primary means for perceiving beauty. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Titian (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90? -1576 Venice) and Workshop.

alb3669064 Mars and Venus United by Love. Artist: Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari) (Italian, Verona 1528-1588 Venice). Dimensions: 81 x 63 3/8 in. (205.7 x 161 cm). Date: 1570s.In this visually opulent and sensual painting, Cupid binds Mars (the god of war) to Venus with a love knot. It celebrates the civilizing and nurturing effects of love, as milk flows from Venus's breast and Mars's warhorse is restrained. By 1621 the painting was owned by Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, along with other mythological works by the artist (two are in the Frick Collection, New York), but its original owner is unknown. A masterpiece of light and color, works such as this had an enduring impact on later artists including Velázquez and Giambattista Tiepolo. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The frame is sixteenth-century Italian. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
