alb3644868 Virgin and Child. Artist: Attributed to Simon Bening (Netherlandish, Ghent (?) 1483/84-1561 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 10 x 8 1/4 in. (25.4 x 21 cm), with added strip of 3/8 in. (1 cm) at top; painted surface 9 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. (24.4 x 21 cm). Date: ca. 1520.Bening, a celebrated miniaturist, has taken the Virgin and Child from David's Rest on the Flight into Egypt (displayed nearby) and placed them in a different context. Joseph is absent, and there is no overt reference to the journey of the Holy Family. Thus, in keeping with a contemporary trend toward the secularization of religious scenes, Mary is presented as the very model of a nurturing mother. A stream of milk flows from her breast to the lips of the Child, who turns toward the viewer and gestures with a spoon, linking physical nourishment with the spiritual nourishment he offers. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(95.3 x 76.8 cm). Date: ca. 1540.The Virgin and Child, painted by a follower of Massys, reflect the influence of Italian painting, particularly the classical figure types favored by Leonardo da Vinci. The landscape, however, ascribed to the Master of the Liège Disciples at Emmaus, sets the stage for the expansive views in Netherlandish paintings of the later sixteenth century. alb3678141 The Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: 20 x 17 in. (50.8 x 43.2 cm). Date: ca. 1512-15.This composition presents the Flight into Egypt as a continuous narrative. In a tiny background scene the Holy Family emerges from the forest, en route to the contemporary Netherlandish town at the left. In the foreground Mary nurses the Child in a moment of repose on their arduous journey, which the viewer is visually meant to follow. David achieved in this painting a remarkable balance of color and a serene sense of light and atmosphere. His awareness of Italian Renaissance conventions is evident in the pyramidal motif of the Virgin and Child and his use of chiaroscuro to convey the volume of the figures. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3680436 The Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5 cm). Date: ca. 1627.This tenderly poetic picture reveals a side of Poussin not otherwise represented by the Museum's splendid holdings of this artist. During the 1620s Poussin was especially attracted by Venetian painting, studying Titian's great mythological compositions, some of which were in aristocratic collections in Rome. He took the inspiration for the fruit-gathering cherubs and the landscape from Titian's Bacchanals. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3611798 The Adoration of the Magi. Artist: Netherlandish (Antwerp Mannerist) Painter (ca. 1520). Dimensions: 27 1/8 x 21 1/2 in. (68.9 x 54.6 cm).The Adoration of the Magi was a favorite theme in Antwerp Mannerist painting, which emerged in the first quarter of the sixteenth century and is characterized by its extravagant and theatrical style. Showing a preference for flamboyant gestures, exotic costumes, and eccentric color effects, works such as the present picture were frequently mass-produced for sale on Antwerp's open art market and for export to southern Europe. The setting, with the crumbling architecture and drawn curtain, here recalls the theatre, as does the stage-like arrangement of the elaborately dressed figures around the Virgin and Child. alb9454553 The Rest on the Flight (a night piece), 1644, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Dutch, 16061669, 3 5/8 x 2 5/16 in. (9.2 x 5.9 cm) (plate), Etching, second state of four, Netherlands, 17th century, Like many artists, Rembrandt portrayed the Holy Family fleeing into Egypt to escape persecution by King Herod. He gave the episode the look of everyday life, with Mary and Joseph in humble dress and consumed by the concerns of parenting. In the nocturnal print, a weary Mary tries to nurse her child, who seems to have fallen asleep. A year later Rembrandt returned to the theme but experimented with a light, delicate etching style akin to drawing. This time the family is assembled on a log, and Joseph pauses, peels an apple, and admires his infant boy.
