At the end of the 1880s he opened his own Glass engraving studio in Kassel. He obtains his glass from the Glashütte Val St. Lambert, among others, and later also from Cologne-Ehrenfeld and presumably other factories. Next to classical motifs on drinking glasses such as landscapes, coats of arms and monogramms, he created plaques with portraits of distinguished persons of the Wilhelmine epoch from the 1890s onwards. In 1895 he showed a portrait plaque with emperor Friedrich on the world fair in Amsterdam and received the golden cross of honour. One of the members of the jury was Emile Gallé who then named Wiegel an ascending star. Art trade, Van Ham.
