Portrait of Otto von Bismarck. 1895 Otto, Prince of Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg (1815–1898) was a conservative German statesman and diplomat. From 1862 to 1890 – with a brief interruption in 1873 - he was Prime Minister of Prussia, and from 1867 to 1871 he was also Chancellor of the North German Confederation. From 1871 to 1890 he was the first chancellor of the German Empire, whose foundation he had significantly promoted. Bismarck is regarded as the finisher of German unification and as the founder of the modern welfare state.
