alb3611092 Study for Treaty with Native Americans (from Sketchbook). Artist: John Quincy Adams Ward (American, Urbana, Ohio 1830-1910 New York). Dimensions: 2 13/16 × 4 3/8 in. (7.1 × 11.1 cm). Date: ca. 1860.Ward, a student of Henry Kirke Brown, became known as the "Dean of American Sculpture." In addition to his monumental bronze "Indian Hunter," installed in New York's Central Park in 1869, he pursued several other American Indian subjects in the 1860s. This page from a sketchbook ,which provides an intimate look at the artist's working methods, shows the leader of a group of Indiansaddressing a quartet of soldiers. This scene may be a historical depiction of the Treaty of Greenville, which took place in Ward's native Ohio in 1795, when several local tribes ceded land to the U.S. Government and established a boundary between American Indian territory and lands open to Euro-American settlers. (32.5cm)Mat: H. 22 in. (55.9 cm)W. 16 in. (40.6 cm). Date: ca. 1680.This image from Bijapur made for the last of its rulers, Sikandar, shown here as a young boy soon before the fall of the kingdom to Mughal conquerors in 1686, brings together all nine 'Adil Shahi sultans in a dynastic assembly likely inspired by Mughal paintings illustrating the same idea. Distant views of water hint at Bijapur's former vastness, which, at its greatest extent, stretched to include Goa on the Arabian Sea. The key of legitimacy is being handed over by Isma'il, founder of the Safavid dynasty of Iran (here erroneously identified as Shah 'Abbas in a later inscription), to Yusuf, founder of the Bijapur dynasty, symbolizing the unwavering allegiance of the 'Adil Shahi family to the Shi'ite creed. During its golden period under the free-thinking Ibrahim II (1579-1626, shown third from right), however, Bijapur witnessed an open embrace of Hinduism and Sufism and the formalization in 1583 of Sunnism as the state religion, which lasted until the end of his tenure. alb3676501 Tutte l'opere d'architettura. Author: Sebastiano Serlio (Italian, Bologna 1475-1554 Fontainebleau). Dimensions: Book: 9 3/4 × 7 3/16 × 2 9/16 in. (24.8 × 18.2 × 6.5 cm)Sheet: 9 9/16 x 6 7/8 in. (24.3 x 17.5 cm). Published in: Venice. Publisher: Francesco de' Franceschi (Italian, active 16th century). Date: 1584.As the first practical and fully illustrated "handbook" of architecture including plans and elevations, Serlio's work, begun in 1537 and published book by book, had a profound impact on the development of Renaissance architecture. In the seventh book, on "Miscellenea" or "Accidenti" (1584), containing a section on villas, Serlio divided his designs into buildings in the city and those in the countryside. Unlike Palladio, he offered different designs for private dwellings distinguishing between various socioeconomic levels in society, a principle worked out in further detail in his unpublished sixth book on domestic architecture (the completed manuscript of which is kept in the Avery Library at Columbia University, New York). Libro Estraordinaria, p. 17, Rustic Gate, "Questa porta rien del Dorico del Corinthio, del Rustico...":Serlio's Libro estraordinario, the sixth book in this first edition of his complete works, deals with the design of gateways. His model for a dramatic rustic gate on Page 17 of Book 6 is quite unusual in that it breaks all the rules of classical architecture, including the order of columns and principles of decoration. Inspired by the often eccentric designs of contemporary Mannerist architecture, Serlio combined rough elements with the more traditional treatment of the Doric order to stress the difference between nature and artifice. Entirely appropriate to the entry of a villa-park, his gate is designed in a heavy rustic manner with a touch of brutishness, which Serlio called bestiale, underlined by the bulls' heads set in the cornerstones of the archway.Libro VII, p. 47, "Della undecima casa fuori della città Capitolo XIX.":The print on Page 47 of Book 6 depicts Serlio's project for a "casa fuori della città" or villa for the wealthy patron on the outskirts of the city. The villa has a perfect square plan with a large courtyard at the center and in front. The villa's front elevation, shown here, consists of an open gallery flanked by pavilions. Serlio specifically stressed the importance of open loggias instead of closed facades in houses "alla campagna," since they provide easy access to the outdoors and delightful prospects of the natural surroundings. alb3676646 The Round Tower, from 'Carceri d'invenzione' (Imaginary Prisons). Artist: Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, Mogliano Veneto 1720-1778 Rome). Dimensions: Sheet: 24 13/16 x 19 1/2 in. (63 x 49.5 cm)Plate: 21 7/16 x 16 5/16 in. (54.5 x 41.5 cm). Publisher: Giovanni Bouchard (French, ca. 1716-1795). Date: ca. 1749-50.A native of Venice, Piranesi went to Rome at age twenty and where he remained for the remainder of his life. Rome was the inspiration for and subject of most of his etchings that number over a thousand. Piranesi studied architecture, engineering and stage design, and his first plans for buildings reflect his training combined with the tremendous impact of classical Roman architecture. The fourteen plates depicting prisons - probably Piranesi's best-known series - were described on their title page as 'capricious inventions.' These structures, their immensity emphasized by the low viewpoint and the diminutive figures, derive from stage prisons rather than real ones. Actual prisons in the Italy were tiny dungeons. Spatial anomalies and ambiguities abound in all the images of the series; they were not meant to be logical but to express the vastness and strength that Piranesi experienced in contemplating Roman architecture.About ten years later, Piranesi reworked these plates and added two new images to the series. The reworked plates are even darker and more complex, with added details and inscriptions. While it is hard to find meaning in the first state of the series, the second state includes explicit references to the justice system under the Roman Republic and to the cruelty for which certain emperors were known.
