The Beauties of Venice . The Paglia Bridge. This is an instantaneous view of the Ponte della Paglia, one of the principal bridges in Venice. Here we get a very good idea of Venetian life, and being one of the chief thoroughfares, it is always a busy spot. Sailors of all nations, from the vessels which lie in the vicinity, gondoliers, numerous idlers, and vendors in cooling drinks and small wares, are always to be found lounging about here, or congregated in the cafes adjoining. This is also the rendezvous of gondolas and gondoliers. The marble steps we see leading to the top of the bridge are common to all such bridges spanning the canals of Venice [B] From the middle of this bridge we get the best view of our next.

The Beauties of Venice . Canal Scene, instantaneous. There are no fewer than 150 canals intercepting Venice in various directions; these canals being connected by 378 bridges of more or less artistic design, and generally built of stone or marble. Most of the houses rise immediately from the canals, sometimes they are separated from them by a narrow street, or ' calle,'' such as we see in the view before us, these streets being paved with broad slabs of stone, sometimes with brick or asphalte [B] The view being instantaneous gives us a good idea of the life pervading the city, which is now becoming one of the greatest seaports of the Adriatic.

902_05_12513164highres Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean.No. 30 .?NAPLES FROM THE ST. ELMO ROAD. We pass still farther south, and we arrive at Naples, than which there is no city more beatifully situated. The Bay of Naples is considered by all Italians and most foreigners to be the most beautiful hi the world, and the Nepolitans have a saying, Vedi Napoli e poi mori (See Naples and then die), though strangers may think it is best to go on living and enjoying its beauties. The life here, amongst the natives especially, is one essentially of ease and idleness, and a true Neapolitan never works more than two days in a Week, which is sufficient to keep him for the remaining five, since a little macaroni, some fruit, and cheap wine is all he requires. Then he stretches himself on his hack on the shores of his hay and sleeps or contemplates the blue sky above him.

902_05_12513158highres Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean..?NICE. IN THE HARBOUR. This harbour does not partake or share in the mercantile nature of that at Marseilles (though there are several lines of steamers connecting it with different parts of the Mediterranean and elsewhere), but has more of an element of pleasure about it?as, indeed, everything has in connection with Nice. Here one sees the yachts that have come round from England, either to take a part in the regattas, or to go on as extended a cruise as we shall make this evening sailing, and the varied bunting-that is always flying aloft gives to this port an appearance of gaiety not seen in many others. The houses that surround it are principally occupied by sailors and their families [B], and others connected with a seafaring life.

902_05_12513154highres Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean. 16.?NICE. THE JARDIN ANGLAIS. With this view we come upon the full life of Nice herself, as we see before us the conclusion of tlie Promenade des Anglais and the celebrated Jardin Anglais itself, where people congregate to gossip, in the mornings and afternoons, over the events of the past evening, to narrate what happened at such and such a ball, which of their friends were successful or unsuccessful at Monte Carlo last night, what new flirtations have sprung up, and to tell each other about their different maladies and disorders. The day life in Nice is so essentially an out-of- door one that the Jardin Anglais forms one of the most important factors in that life and, without it to resort to, Nice would lose half her charms;
