alb4452326 Vase, The low, rejuvenating foot of the round vase is adorned with an engraved band of stylized leaf motifs. The vase rests on this, which is made up of a convex body and a high, slightly constricted neck. The body is divided at the widest point into six oval lobes, each decorated with a stylized floral pattern on a punched background. A turquoise is applied in the center of each floral pattern. Under this edge of six lobes, six peacocks, viewed from the front, are shown. They are separated by flowers. There are three masks and three dragonflies alternately above the edge of the lobes. This richly ornamented portion curves at the top, forming an ear above each dragonfly. Realistically rendered nails and even sets of holes, such as the closure of a buckle, create the illusion of curling leather in this zone reminiscent of rolling work. The slender neck emerges from this, which is characterized by a pronounced hammer stroke structure. Just below the narrowest part, the neck is decorated with three turquoise and above, just below the smooth lip edge, with an edge of six bulges, mask, mascaron, ornament, flowers, Frans Zwollo (I), Amsterdam, 1900, silver (metal), turquoise (mineral), h 20.6 cm × d 12.0 cm × w 522 gr.

alb3626830 Jael Slaying Sisera. Artist: Carlo Maratti (Italian, Camerano 1625-1713 Rome). Dimensions: sheet: 8 3/4 x 10 11/16 in. (22.3 x 27.2 cm). Date: 1625-1713.In the later 1670s, Maratti designed a series of mosaics for a space in the left nave of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. It consists of biblical patriarchs, prophets, and heroines in six half-lunettes and four pendentives along with Saint John's vision of the Immaculate Conception in the surmounting cupola. This is a study for the Jael Slaying Sisera mosaic. Sisera, a Canaanite general and enemy of the Israelites, had sought refuge in the tent of Jael after his defeat on the battlefield, mistakenly believing her to be an ally. Plying Sisera with food and drink and inducing him to sleep, Jael hammered a tent peg into his skull, nailing him to the ground. This noble act earned Jael a place among the heroines of ancient Israel. Maratti's drawing shows her holding the tent peg and hammer, poised to perform her grisly yet heroic deed.
