alb4875466 John Smibert, The Continence of Scipio, ca. 1719-1722, oil on canvas, 45 3/4 in. x 62 5/8 in. (116.21 cm x 159.07 cm), Smibert's painting is a copy of a 1640 painting by the revered French painter Nicolas Poussin. Its subject derives from Roman history. During the Second Punic War, the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus decided to return his war spoils, including the bride of his enemy Allucius, the young prince of the Celtiberians. Scipio's moral fortitude presented an ideal subtext for Poussin's classical interpretation. John Smibert, the copyist, was a portrait painter from Scotland who trained in London and later set out with Dean George Berkeley to found a college in Bermuda. This painting was intended to be part of the college's teaching collection, but when that project fell through, Smibert exhibited it in his Boston studio and art supply store. In Boston it set an example for John Singleton Copley, who admired it. At Bowdoin College since James Bowdoin III's bequest in 1813, the work has contributed to the education of countless generations of students.

alb3680436 The Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5 cm). Date: ca. 1627.This tenderly poetic picture reveals a side of Poussin not otherwise represented by the Museum's splendid holdings of this artist. During the 1620s Poussin was especially attracted by Venetian painting, studying Titian's great mythological compositions, some of which were in aristocratic collections in Rome. He took the inspiration for the fruit-gathering cherubs and the landscape from Titian's Bacchanals. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3634701 Saints Peter and John Healing the Lame Man. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 49 1/2 x 65 in. (125.7 x 165.1 cm). Date: 1655.At the temple in Jerusalem where the old and infirm beg alms, Peter and John cure a cripple (Acts 3:1-10): "Then Peter said, Silver and gold I have none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." The composition is indebted to Raphael, and the gestures of the central group are reminiscent of Michelangelo's Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. The picture was painted for Monsieur Mercier of Lyons. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3673657 The Experts. Artist: Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (French, Paris 1803-1860 Fontainebleau). Dimensions: 18 1/4 x 25 1/4 in. (46.4 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1837.In this satirical work, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1839, elegantly dressed "experts" examine a landscape in the style of the seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin. Decamps's generation, including such figures as Théodore Rousseau and Jules Dupré, sought to challenge the prevailing view that the art of the past should dictate contemporary taste.Scenes in which monkeys are engaged in human activities--singeries in French--are part of a tradition that can be traced to Antiquity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3628066 The Abduction of the Sabine Women. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 60 7/8 x 82 5/8 in. (154.6 x 209.9 cm). Date: probably 1633-34.The Romans invited the neighboring Sabines with the intention of forcibly retaining their young women as wives. Romulus raised his cloak as the pre-arranged signal for the warriors to seize the women. The yellow armor worn by the man at the right is modeled after a Roman lorica, which was made of leather and reproduced the anatomy of the male torso. The painting belonged to the maréchal de Créquy, who was the French ambassador to Rome from June 1633 to July 1634. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601766 Midas Washing at the Source of the Pactolus. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 38 3/8 x 28 5/8 in. (97.5 x 72.7 cm). Date: ca. 1627.The picture was painted not long after Poussin arrived in Rome. It represents the story of Midas, an allegory of vanity, from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Bacchus offered Midas a gift, and the king asked that everything he touched be turned to gold. Soon realizing that he could neither eat nor drink, he asked to be relieved of the gift and Bacchus sent him to wash it away in the Pactolus river. Partly submerged in water, Midas is accompanied by the personification of the river god. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3604125 Heroic Landscape with Rainbow. Artist: Joseph Anton Koch (Austrian, Obergibeln bei Elbigenalp 1768-1839 Rome). Dimensions: 42 3/4 x 37 3/4 in. (108.6 x 95.9 cm). Date: 1824.The classically-trained painter Joseph Anton Koch was a father-figure to many German-speaking artists who visited Rome in the early nineteenth century. He renewed the genre of heroic landscape painting, which had been established by the seventeenth-century French masters Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Koch's fame rests on this iconic image, which he referred to as a "Greek landscape." It is the fourth and final version of a composition he first painted in 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601242 A Classical Landscape. Artist: Sébastien Bourdon (French, Montpellier 1616-1671 Paris). Dimensions: 27 1/2 x 36 1/4 in. (69.9 x 92.1 cm). Date: probably 1660s.Bourdon's rigorously structured classical landscapes, such as this one, were modeled on those of Nicolas Poussin. In this landscape the painter quoted ancient and contemporary works of art. The statue of a horse at the left is a direct citation of one of the statues of the Dioscuri on top of the Quirinal Hill in Rome. The dancers at the right, instead, derive from Poussin's Bacchanal (now in the National Gallery, London). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3655837 Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 32 1/8 in. (65.4 x 81.6 cm). Date: 1882-85.The distinctive silhouette of Mont Saint-Victoire rises above the Arc River valley near the town of Aix. To paint this scene, Cézanne stood close to Montbriand, his sister's property, at the top of the hill just behind her house; the wall of the neighboring farmhouse is barely visible. Cézanne sought to reveal the inner geometry of nature, "to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of museums." Indeed the railroad viaduct that cuts throught this pastoral scene is evocative of a Roman aqueduct, recalling paintings by Nicolas Poussin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3615534 Evening: Landscape with an Aqueduct. Artist: Théodore Gericault (French, Rouen 1791-1824 Paris). Dimensions: 98 1/2 x 86 1/2 in. (250.2 x 219.7 cm). Date: 1818.This work is one of a projected set of four monumental landscapes representing the times of day that Gericault painted in his Paris studio. (Only three were completed.) Conceived as a decorative ensemble, the paintings fuse souvenirs of ruins in the Italian countryside, which the artist had visited in 1816 and 1817, with the grand manner exemplified by past masters Nicolas Poussin and Joseph Vernet. The stormy sky and turbulent mood of this picture exemplify notions of the Sublime and the aesthetic of the emerging Romantic movement. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3616437 Blind Orion Searching for the Rising Sun. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 46 7/8 x 72 in. (119.1 x 182.9 cm). Date: 1658.For his depiction of the gigantic hunter, painted for Michel Passart, Poussin drew on the Greek writer Lucian: "Orion who is blind, is carrying Cedalion, and the latter, riding on his back, is showing him the way to the sunlight. The rising sun is healing [his] blindness." Poussin also studied the sixteenth-century commentary on the tale by Natalis Comes that affords a meteorological interpretation. He therefore added Diana, standing upon the clouds that wreathe Orion's face, symbol of the power of the moon to gather the earth's vapors and turn them into rain. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3648248 The Companions of Rinaldo. Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, Les Andelys 1594-1665 Rome). Dimensions: 46 1/2 x 40 1/4 in. (118.1 x 102.2 cm). Date: ca. 1633.This canvas probably belonged to the antiquary and collector Cassiano dal Pozzo. It illustrates an episode from Torquato Tasso's (1544-1595) heroic crusader poem Jerusalem Delivered (1580), in which the Christian knights Carlo and Ubaldo confront a dragon in their attempt to rescue Rinaldo from a pagan sorceress. As the first crusade took place in the eleventh century, their antique Roman arms and armor are anachronistic. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3648370 Tobit Burying the Dead. Artist: Andrea di Lione (Italian, Naples 1610-1685 Naples). Dimensions: 50 1/4 x 68 1/2 in. (127.6 x 174 cm). Date: 1640s.The cloaked figure is Tobit, a devout Jew who in defiance of Sennacherib's orders directed the burial of the Jews whom the king had killed outside the walls of Nineveh (Tobit I:17-20). Andrea di Lione was in Rome in the 1640s, where he knew both Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Nicolas Poussin, and this work is indebted to both of those artists.
