Date: ca. 1627.The picture was painted not long after Poussin arrived in Rome. It represents the story of Midas, an allegory of vanity, from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Bacchus offered Midas a gift, and the king asked that everything he touched be turned to gold. Soon realizing that he could neither eat nor drink, he asked to be relieved of the gift and Bacchus sent him to wash it away in the Pactolus river. Koch's fame rests on this iconic image, which he referred to as a "Greek landscape." It is the fourth and final version of a composition he first painted in 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe). As the first crusade took place in the eleventh century, their antique Roman arms and armor are anachronistic. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb9331715 Die Römischen Ansichten (Views of Rome)/ Veduta d'una parte di Roma Antica., Joseph Koch, artist, 1810, Italy, etching, Joseph Anton Koch (17681839) was an Austrian painter of the Neoclassical and later the German Romantic movements. He is probably the most significant Neoclassical landscape painter. Koch was influenced by the style of Nicolas Poussin (15941665), which he sought to revive, informed by his own vision. Koch belonged to a generation of artists that used empirical images of nature in idealised compositions, and in doing so he romanticised nature. He trained at the Hohe Karlsschule (military academy), in Stuttgart from 1785 to 1791. However, he rejected the restrictive and outmoded teaching methods and he left the school in 1791 for Strasbourg.
