902_05_12512065highres Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. created in 1887. A tour of North Wales. 9.The Fairy Glen, Bettws-y-Coed.?This is truly an enchanting spot, and the tourist should spend a good quarter-of-an-hour in feasting his eyes on the beauty of the scene. It is justly named Fairy Glen, for one might almost fancy one saw the whole legion of the airy tribe making merry and skipping about in the sunlight. The prettiest view is that up the Conway, which is here shewn. None should ever leave the neighbourhood of Bettws-y-Coed without visiting this very romantic spot The swimming vapour slopes athwart the glen, Puts forth an arm, and creeps from pine to pine, And loiters, slowly drawn. On either hand The lawns and meadow-ledges midway down Hang rich in flowers, and far below them roars The long brook falling thro' the clov'n ravine In cataract after cataract to the sea.

alb3621538 Bather in the Woods. Artist: Camille Pissarro (French, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas 1830-1903 Paris). Dimensions: 23 3/4 x 28 3/4 in. (60.3 x 73 cm). Date: 1895.In summer 1893 Pissarro wrote his son Lucien that he was planning a series of canvases of nude peasant women bathing, even though he foresaw difficulties in engaging models in rural Éragny. None were completed until 1894, and Pissarro continued to paint variations on the theme through 1896. This picture falls midway in the project. Pissarro's approach reflects the continuing influence of divisionist technique, but more naturalistic tendencies emerge in his attempts to capture the delicate fall of light over the grassy bank and the woman's back. Her pose recurs in two studies of a clothed model painted the same year. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3683320 The Execution of Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Ubaldo Gandolfi (Italian, San Matteo della Decima 1728-1781 Ravenna). Dimensions: 24 × 16 1/2 in. (61 × 41.9 cm). Date: ca. 1770.This work, by one of the leading painters of eighteenth-century Bologna, is an oil sketch (modello) for a major altarpiece in the church of San Michele, Vercelli, midway between Milan and Turin. Ubaldo Gandolfi has endowed the scene with a visionary quality, as angels appear to the saint. Especially effective is the contrast between the executioner rolling up his sleeve and the prayerful attitude of the saint. In the left background is Salome, who as a reward for her dancing had requested King Herod that Saint John's head be brought to her on a silver platter. akg4737037 Akagi was an aircraft carrier built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), named after Mount Akagi in present-day Gunma Prefecture. Though she was laid down as an Amagi-class battlecruiser, Akagi was converted to an aircraft carrier while still under construction to comply with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. The ship was rebuilt from 1935 to 1938 with her original three flight decks consolidated into a single enlarged flight deck and an island superstructure. Akagi's aircraft served in the Second Sino-Japanese War in the late 1930s. Upon the formation of the First Air Fleet or Kido Butai (Striking Force) in early 1941, she became its flagship, and remained so for the duration of her service. With other fleet carriers, she took part in the Attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the invasion of Rabaul in the Southwest Pacific in January 1942. The following month, her aircraft bombed Darwin, Australia, and assisted in the conquest of the Dutch East Indies. In March and April 1942, Akagi's aircraft helped sink a British heavy cruiser and an Australian destroyer in the Indian Ocean Raid. After a brief refit, Akagi and three other fleet carriers of the Kido Butai participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942. After bombarding American forces on the atoll, Akagi and the other carriers were attacked by aircraft from Midway and the carriers Enterprise, Hornet, and Yorktown. Dive bombers from Enterprise severely damaged Akagi. When it became obvious she could not be saved, she was scuttled by Japanese destroyers to prevent her from falling into enemy hands. The loss of Akagi and three other IJN carriers at Midway was a crucial strategic defeat for Japan and contributed significantly to the Allies' ultimate victory in the Pacific.

alb9461025 Yong bell, late 6th-5th century BCE, 23 in. (58.42 cm), Bronze, China, 6th-5th century BCE, When this bell was made, around 500 BCE, Chinese bells had already evolved over 800 years. They were sophisticated musical instruments. This bell is called a yong, the quintessential bell type found in high-ranking late Zhou tombs. Unlike the bo type, seen elsewhere in this exhibition, it has an arch-shaped bottom, straight sides, cylindrical bosses, and a columnar shank (yong) with a loop suspension device that causes the bell to tilt toward the player rather than remain straight up and down. This permitted greater accuracy in striking than with vertically suspended bellsan important feature, since yong bells can emit two notes depending on whether they are struck in the center or midway to the side. The symmetrical group of bosses on each bell probably served to diminish the nonharmonic overtones emitted by the upper part of the bell, thereby emphasizing the fundamental notes.

It would have been used to spoon wine into smaller vessels such as a jue. The handle is divided into three sections: a taotie (composite animal) mask just behind the bowl; a band of lozenges with a plain, narrow central ridge midway along the handle; and a rather elaborate arrangement of dragons at the end of the handle. The animal forming the final curve of the spoon is a dragon; its body bends violently to the left before rising vertically, its leg and claw on the outside of the handle.

alb3499098 Baker's Falls (No. 8 of The Hudson River Portfolio), 1823–24, Aquatint printed in color with hand-coloring; first state of two (Koke), Image: 14 1/16 x 20 3/16 in. (35.7 x 51.3 cm), Prints, after William Guy Wall (Irish, Dublin 1792–after 1864 Ireland (active America)), The accompanying text notes that these falls are 'situated within a mile of the beautiful village of Sandy Hill [now called Hudson Falls]...their total height...estimated at upwards of seventy feet...There is no perpendicular cataract, neither do the waters rush over such regular and massive platforms as at Glen's Falls: a long ledge of rock crosses the fall about midway, which breaks the main body of the torrent, and scatters it into a variety of picturesque forms and directions.

alb3618324 Falls of the Llugwy, at Pont-y-Pair. Artist: Roger Fenton (British, 1819-1869). Dimensions: 35.8 x 42.9 cm (14 1/16 x 16 7/8 in.). Date: 1857.In autumn 1857, Fenton traveled to the small village of Bettws-y-Coed, in North Wales, a favorite summer haunt of anglers and watercolorists, tucked in the lush gorge of the Llugwy River near its confluence with the Conway. There, in the nearby rocky streams, wooded hollows, and mountainous expanses, Fenton found the subjects of some of his finest landscape photographs. For this picture, Fenton stood precisely in the position described in Thomas Roscoe's guidebook Wanderings and Excursions in North Wales (1853), perched on an outcropping with his back against one pier of the old stone bridge in the center of town: "I passed over [the Pont-y-Pair] to the opposite bank ... and took my station upon one of the rocky projections looking up the river. It was some time since any rain had fallen, and the stream was comparatively shallow, exposing the rude masses of granite that stood midway in the channel, and laying bare to their foundations the broad deep chasms which the rushing waters had formed in their headlong descent." By photographing from below the level of the upstream river, Fenton immersed himself deeply in the natural elements, intensifying the experience of the falls. The dynamic structure of Fenton's composition-zigzagging bands of water, rock, vegetation, and sky-is also noteworthy, adding a dynamism to the rushing river while only hinting at the village buildings beyond. alb3616850 Sakyamuni and Attendant Bodhisattvas in a Landscape. Artist: Unidentified Artist Chinese. Culture: China. Dimensions: Image: 38 x 19 1/4 in. (96.5 x 48.9 cm)Overall with mounting: 78 x 24 5/8 in. (198.1 x 62.5 cm)Overall with knobs: 78 x 26 5/8 in. (198.1 x 67.6 cm). Date: late 13th-early 14th century. This painting stands midway between the hieratic icons employed in formal temple ceremonies and the informal images that served Chan (or Zen) monks as personal devotional images for use in meditation. The intimate scale, informality of the figures' poses, and landscape setting link the painting to Chan-style depictions of Shakyamuni--the human origin of the Buddha--as an ascetic descending from the mountains just prior to achieving Buddhahood. In this scene, the Buddhist equivalent of Christ's Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, Shakyamuni offers a parallel to the Chan practitioner's search for individual enlightenment.Landscape elements in the painting follow the meticulously descriptive style of the Southern Song Painting Academy. The angular contours of the figures' fluttering drapery lines are flat and conventionalized, however, and suggest an early fourteenth-century date for the piece.
