MG1135167 AFGHANISTAN. Kabul. 2022. Occasionally, there are the signs of “the invisible” of Afghanistan: perhaps hundreds of thousands of people who were unable to flee, who are in hiding for fear of their lives. I meet one of them, an ex-translator for the U.S. and the Canadian Army. He has stayed in the same room with his wife and two boys for six months, desperately waiting for a smuggler to secure his family visas to Pakistan. From there, he hopes to begin a new life in Canada. He explains that he doesn’t want to go to the United States, recounting a story of watching every day as the excess food from mealtime was dumped in the corner of an American base and burned. I would later get a Whatsapp message from him. He had safely made it to Pakistan.

alb3684517 The Supper at Emmaus. Artist: Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez) (Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid). Dimensions: 48 1/2 x 52 1/4 in. (123.2 x 132.7 cm). Date: 1622-23.The picture may have been painted in Seville, where Velázquez was trained, or in Madrid, where he moved in 1623. The realism of the figures, the strong dramatic light, and the attention to still-life details recall the work of Caravaggio, which Velázquez would have known in Seville through copies. Christ is shown at the moment when he is recognized by two disciples following his resurrection, as "he took bread, blessed and broke it, and handed it to them.". alb3682386 Merrymakers at Shrovetide. Artist: Frans Hals (Dutch, Antwerp 1582/83-1666 Haarlem). Dimensions: 51 3/4 x 39 1/4 in. (131.4 x 99.7 cm). Date: ca. 1616-17.The loud style of this early work by Hals suits its subject, which is Vastenavond (Shrovetide or Mardi Gras), a pre-Lenten carnival featuring bad food and worse behavior. Two characters from the comic stage, Peeckelhaering (Pickled Herring) and Hans Wurst (John Wiener?), cozy up to a young "lady" with a Dutch boy haircut and a bull neck. Hans's gesture, the deflated bagpipe, and other motifs comprise a chorus of sexual commentary. The picture looks surprisingly Flemish in its vivid coloring, loose brushwork, and crowded composition, which suggests that it may date from slightly after Hals's three months in Antwerp during 1616. In that mecca for Netherlandish artists he could have seen great works by Rubens and the early paintings of his own Flemish counterpart, Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: FRANS HALS.

Dimensions: Overall, including added strips at top, bottom, and right, 46 7/8 x 63 3/4 in. (119 x 162 cm); original painted surface 45 7/8 x 62 7/8 in. (116.5 x 159.5 cm). Date: 1565.This panel belongs to a series, commissioned by the Antwerp merchant Niclaes Jongelinck for his suburban home. The cycle originally included six paintings showing the times of the year. Apart from The Harvesters, which is usually identified as representing July-August, or late summer, four other paintings of the group have survived (now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and Lobkowicz Collection, Prague). Bruegel's series is a watershed in the history of western art. The religious pretext for landscape painting has been suppressed in favor of a new humanism, and the unidealized description of the local scene is based on natural observations. alb3611143 The Last Supper, from The Passion of Christ. Artist: Hendrick Goltzius (Netherlandish, Mühlbracht 1558-1617 Haarlem). Dimensions: sheet: 7 7/8 x 5 1/4 in. (20 x 13.3 cm). Date: 1598.Between 1596 and 1598 Goltzius engraved this series of twelve prints illustrating the Passion of Christ. They reflect the influence of the Netherlandish artist Lucas van Leyden, in both the figure types and the actual engraving technique. In contrast to his normal graphic style, which was characterized by a dramatic line that swells and tapers around the figures and background, here Goltzius uses thin even lines crossed with long straight hatching lines that are typically found in Lucas's prints. In Northern Europe at the end of the sixteenth century there was a revival of interest in the works of Lucas and this series can be seen within that larger context. So, too, can Goltzius's famous Pietà modeled after Albrecht Dürer and the Circumcision and the Adoration of the Magi from his series the Life of the Virgin. The Passion of Christ was extremely popular during Goltzius's own lifetime and well beyond. This is evidenced by a very deceptive set of copies produced in Goltzius's own studio and six additional sets of copies dating from the late 1590s to the mid-seventeenth century. In addition to having two sets of the Goltzius's original prints, the Met has three different sets of copies and a single plate from a fourth (see 51.501.168(1-12), 53.601.336(25-36) 51.501169(1-12) and 51.501.170).
