This relatively small vessel belongs to the extensive class of Red Line Pelicas. The name is derived from the Red Line Painter, a late black-figured vase painter, who sometimes borders ornamental stripes below the picture fields with red lines. The painter of Pelike Rhodes 10775, to whom this vessel is attributed, belongs in his immediate circle. Side A shows Heracles fighting with an Amazon. The hero grabs the helmet of his opponent with his left hand. In his right hand he holds the sword ready to strike. He is clothed with a short chiton and his characteristic lion skin. The Amazon has already sunk to one knee and holds her round shield protectively in front of her body. She wears a short dotted chiton and a cloak. The shield emblem - possibly a bull's skull - the edge of the helmet bush and the skin parts of the Amazon are indicated in white. Behind the fighting persons are plant tendrils. On side B the god Dionysos is depicted on the right, sitting on a cube and turning his head back to a dancing maenad. He is dressed in a white chiton and red and white dotted cloak. In his hands he holds a large drinking horn. The maenad dividing to the left is wearing a chiton and a patterned cloak. Behind the figures there are long vines. A zigzag band with dotted tips is painted above both picture fields.
