alb3667223 Veduta interna dell'Atrio del Portico di Ottavia (Internal View of the Atrium of the Portico of Octavia), in: 'Vedute di Roma' (Views of Rome). Artist: Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, Mogliano Veneto 1720-1778 Rome). Dimensions: Plate: 22 x 28 in. (55.9 x 71.1 cm). Series/Portfolio: Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome). Date: 1760.This view places the spectator within the best preserved section of the complex of colonnades originally built in the Republican era and later restored by Emperor Augustus, who dedicated the portico to his sister Octavia. Although the name survives from the Augustan restoration, such visible remains as the elegant Corinthian columns and the form of the pediment, hemmed in by medieval accretions, date to a later reconstruction by Septimius Severus. Piranesi shows the space as it looked in the eighteenth century, with the stalls of the fishmarket, which had long been held within the portico, visible along one wall of the atrium and continuing down a corridor into the distance. The sensation of brilliant sunlight is masterfully achieved in this etching and may owe something to the example of Canaletto's views of Venice (1973.634), produced around the time that Piranesi returned home in 1744. Piranesi's own sensitivity to light effects--one of his early biographers records that he committed to memory the appearance of changing light on the ancient walls, from the full glare of the sun to the cool illumination of the moon--was one of the qualities that made his views of Rome so exceptional. The love for the texture and heft of blocks of stone and the fascination with their manner of cutting and assembly that is so evident here, and in many of his other prints, may have been the legacy of Piranesi's father, a stonemason and master builder. Series/Portfolio: Vedute di Roma. Date: ca. 1750.Until the construction of railways in Rome in the nineteenth century, visitors entered the city through the Piazza del Popolo. The area acquired its monumental profile under Pope Sixtus V, who oversaw the construction of twin churches opposite the gateway into the square and the placement of an Egyptian obelisk in the center. In Piranesi's view, the obelisk extends almost from top to bottom of the composition, dwarfing the spectators gesturing beneath it and the coaches that circulate nearby. Radiating into the distance are the three great avenues that lead - as Piranesi's caption reminds us - to three popular tourist destinations, the Piazza di Spagna, the Palazzo di Venezia, and the Porto di Ripetta. alb3674506 Veduta dell'Anfiteatro Flavio detto il Colosseo, from: 'Vedute di Roma' (Views of Rome). Artist: Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, Mogliano Veneto 1720-1778 Rome). Dimensions: sheet: 30 x 40 in. (76.2 x 101.6 cm). Series/Portfolio: Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome). Date: 1776.Piranesi's thorough familiarity with the Colosseum--he had already produced three views of this most famous of Roman ruins--and his skill at perspective rendering allowed him to produce this magnificent view of the ancient amphitheater seen as if from the air. By allowing the monument to fill the entire sheet of paper and by placing tiny figures in the center of the image, Piranesi effectively conveys the vastness of the ruin, while the bird's-eye view reveals the plan and exposes the structure. Piranesi's labels are indicative of his antiquarian research; they inform us of the location in which each rank of Roman society would have been seated, from the emperor and his court to the noble youth with their teachers. The overall darkness of the image, while characteristic of Piranesi's late Vedute, gives the impression that the Colosseum is lit by the moon--we know that Piranesi studied ruins under such conditions. Only the center of the theater is illuminated, where tiny figures gather around the monumental cross. This crucifix, together with the stations of the cross that surround the arena, were added by Pope Benedict XIV in 1743 to sanctify the space in which it was believed that many early Christians had been martyred. alb3627014 Design for an Empire Daybed. Artist: Anonymous, 19th century. Dimensions: Overall: 12 3/8 × 19 3/8 in. (31.4 × 49.2 cm). Date: 1800-1820.This design for a daybed was made early in the 19th century. Characteristic are its legs which are directly based on Antique models found during the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. The objects were published in various ways amongst others by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Percier and Fontaine used similar legs in many of their designs in their Collection of interior designs (...). Through these publications a wide audience became familiar with the same type of vocabulary which sometimes makes it difficult to determine where a specific design was actually conceived. The watermark in the paper indicates that the paper's manufacturer was a Dutch company known as Honig & Zoonen. It does not follow that the design is therefore Dutch as well. The same watermark is found for example in the 18th-century copies of the Declaration of Independence made by the American printer John Dunlap. Just like design esthetic, by the early 19th century the paper trade had become an international business. This design for a daybed is most likely either Italian or French, but as long as the hand of the artist is not recognized, it is difficult to ascertain its origins with certainty. Date: mid-18th century. In 1758, the French architect Julien-David Le Roy published 'Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce' (The ruins of the most beautiful monuments of Greece) in which he proclaimed that the architectural orders were a Greek invention inherited by the Romans who imitated and subsequently debased them. Le Roy wrote of the Roman Composite order, "[I]t is only a fairly imperfect mixture of the Ionic and Corinthian and by altering the proportions of the column from the Doric order and by multiplying the moldings of its entablature, they have perhaps made it lose a lot of its male character, which was a distinguishing feature in Greece." Partly in response to such contemporary polemical salvos touting the significance of Greek architecture, including Marc-Antoine Laugier's 'Essai sur l'architecture' (1753), which demonstrated the evolution of wood to stone architecture as exemplified by the Greek Doric temple, in 1761 Piranesi published 'Della magnificenza ed architettura de' romani' (Concerning the magnificense and architecture of the Romans). Piranesi's lengthy essay in Italian and Latin expressed his conviction of the superiority of Etruscan design and was accompanied by thirty-eight engraved illustrations, including this foldout of Roman Ionic capitals. In the plate, Piranesi has surrounded Le Roy's own engraving of a capital from the Erechtheion in Athens with an elaborate array of more complex Roman variants. At the top of the plate is a quote from Le Roy: "The Ionic capitals one sees in Rome seem poor and defective," to which Piranesi responds by illustrating many of the "magnificent" Ionic capitals of Rome. Series/Portfolio: Le Antichità Romane, tome 3. Date: published 1756-57.While Piranesi was at work on the Antichità Romane, the result of years of research into the highly developed engineering skills of the Romans, the first threats to Roman preeminence were heard. In the early 1750s, certain French and British scholars and architects had begun to assert that the Romans were mere imitators of the Greeks, under whom all the arts had attained perfection. A desire to defend the Romans from this charge may lie behind the exaggeration that appears in some of the plates of this publication--here Piranesi makes the mausoleum appear much larger than it actually is and exaggerates the difficulty of its construction. This page provides a good example of Piranesi's novel illustrative techniques: he represents three supplemental views on scrolls of paper hung behind the primary scene, while playfully undermining the illusion he has created by making the hook on the left scroll overlap the edge of the sheet. His 'Antichità Romane' of 1756, a four-volume work that won him admittance to the British Society of Antiquarians, includes maps of the ancient walls and aqueduct system and a thorough investigation of Roman burial customs. The third volume illustrates the sepulchral monuments of the Via Appia Antica, including six plates devoted to the tomb of Cecilia Metella. alb3615380 A View of the Vestibule of Santa Maria Maggiore at Rome. Artist and publisher: Georges François Blondel (French, 1730-after 1792). Dimensions: Sheet: 22 1/4 x 16 in. (56.5 x 40.6 cm). Published in: London. Date: 1765-67.Georges-François Blondel was the son of a leading French architectural theorist Jacques-François Blondel. After training in Paris, he worked first in Rome and then in London, where he learned the technique of mezzotint engraving. This print depicts a celebrated structure of eighteenth-century Rome, Ferdinando Fuga's dramatic facade of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, completed in 1743. It is one of nine architectural views the artist published between 1765 and 1767. His taste for monumental classical structures and his tendency to make even modern subjects resemble ancient ruins suggest his admiration for Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1788). The fragmented view, small figures, and classical architectural forms which Blondel created similarly give the late Baroque structure the appearance of an ancient ruin. Unusually, Blondel rocked the mezzotint plate twice: first when preparing the ground for the design, and again when scraping the composition, creating haphazard, expressive strokes that animate the sky.
