alb3629300 Charles Baudelaire. Artist: Étienne Carjat (French, Fareins 1828-1906 Paris). Printer: Goupil et Cie (French, active 1850-84). Date: ca. 1863.Although the great French poet Baudelaire famously declared photography to be "the refuge of every would-be painter, every painter too ill-endowed or too lazy to complete his studies," he posed before the camera several times. This striking portrait of the brooding poet by Carjat is perhaps the best known, for it was published in the widely distributed series entitled Galerie contemporaine, littéraire, artistique. The Galerie contemporaine is a high point in photographic publishing. Issued in parts from 1876 to 1884 by the firm of Goupil, the series contained 241 portraits of leading figures from the worlds of art, literature, music, science, and politics by a host of Parisian photographers. The illustrations were printed as woodburytypes-a photomechanical process that reproduced the continuous tones of photography but did so with printer's ink. The speed and economy with which woodburytypes could be printed, as well as their permanence (unlike traditional photographic processes that were subject to fading), made them a highly practical substitute for albumen silver prints in book publication or other situations where mass production was desirable. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3633603 Paradise. Artist: Federico Zuccaro (Zuccari) (Italian, Sant'Angelo in Vado 1540/42-1609 Ancona). Dimensions: 15 7/8 × 44 13/16 in. (40.3 × 113.8 cm). Date: 1565-77.The present drawing is study for the fresco designed for, but never executed in, the Sala del Maggior Consiglio of the Doges' Palace, Venice. In this representation of Paradise, Christ is seated in judgment at the center and flanked by the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist who intercede for mankind. At the right appear a throng of Old Testament figures dominated by Adam, Eve, and Moses with the tablets of the law. At the left are ranged a host of saints of the New Dispensation: Saint Peter and Saint Paul with the other Apostles, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Lawrence, Saint Sebastian, Saint Francis, Saint Dominic, and many others. God the Father appears in glory at upper center, while the central foreground is occupied by angel musicians. Hermann Voss, who first published this drawing, suggested that it is Federico Zuccaro's project for the redecoration of the end wall of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio in the Palazzo Ducale after the fire of 1577. However, Walter Vitzthum pointed out the testimony of Vasari in the 1568 edition of the Lives and the stylistic evidence of the drawing itself indicate that this project is earlier; it must date from Federico's first visit to Venice in the mid 1560s. This Paradise may have been intended to replace Guariento's probably damaged Coronation of the Virgin on the end wall, more than a decade before the 1577 fire. In the Metropolitan Museum of Art's project, the reserves in the paper indicate the placement of the two doors that pierce the wall and of the top of the back of the central bench. The six pendentives indicated at the top margin suggest that Federico proposed a vaulted ceiling for the great room, instead of the flat wooden ceiling that at this narrow end was originally supported by eleven corbels. In the Musée du Louvre, Paris, there is another large design for the same scheme (Inv. 4546), which differs from our drawing most notably in that the central subject is the Coronation of the Virgin. Though later in his career Federico Zuccaro executed a painting for the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Frederick Barharossa Submitting to Pope Alexander III), the Paradise that eventually replaced Guariento's Coronation is a late work of Jacopo Tintoretto. New information concerning the Paradise in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio has recently been supplied by Juergen Schulz. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3646207 Costume Design for a Demon (Señor Remon), for a performance held during the celebration of the wedding of Marie-Louise de Bourbon with Archduke Léopold de Habsbourg-Lorraine, hosted by the Marquis of Ossuna in Madrid in 1764. Artist: Charles de La Traverse (French, Paris 1726-1787 Paris); Formerly attributed to Pierre Jean Boquet (French, Paris 1751-1817 Paris). Dimensions: 11 7/8 x 9 3/16 in. (30.2 x 23.4 cm). Date: ca. 1764.Costume design by Charles de la Traverse for a demon (Señor Remon), for a performance held during the celebration of the wedding of Marie-Louise de Bourbon with Archduke Léopold de Habsbourg-Lorraine, hosted by the Marquis of Ossuna in Madrid in 1764. The costume is presented on a figure 'Señor Remon' displayed in three-quarter view, his right arm extended in front of him, and his left hand resting on his hip; his left foot is in in front of the right, and his head turned toward his right shoulder. He is wearing a brown tonnelet with puffy sleeves and wide, scallop-edged skirt, long gloves, breeches, knee-length stockings, and flat shoes. A crown made up of flames adorns his head. Another motif made up of flames decorates the tonnelet above his stomach. On the lower-right corner of the sheet, behind his right foot, is a male bust: his face revealing an expression of distress, his hands open to the sides, and also wearing a crown of flames, likely intended to be a detailed view of the face of 'Señor Remon'. The recurrent fire motifs in the costume reinforce that the character 'Señor Remon' was meant to be a demon, which is stated in the inscription. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3671989 The Virgin Adoring the Host. Artist: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, Montauban 1780-1867 Paris). Dimensions: 15 7/8 x 12 7/8 in. (40.3 x 32.7 cm). Date: 1852.This small, jewel-like devotional painting was made as a gift for Ingres's friend Louise Marcotte, who introduced the artist to Delphine Ramel, whom he married in 1852. The Raphaelesque composition is based on one Ingres first painted in 1841 for the future czar Alexander II, which includes the two patron saints of Russia, Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas (Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow). For this version, Ingres replaced the Russian saints with two French ones. He would go on to paint four more variants, as well as, in 1855, a watercolor for Madame Ingres herself (Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Mass.). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3628020 At the Circus: The Spanish Walk (Au Cirque: Le Pas espagnol). Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, Albi 1864-1901 Saint-André-du-Bois). Dimensions: 13 3/4 x 9 13/16 in. (35 x 25 cm). Date: 1899.The grand master of urban entertainments, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made many paintings and drawings on the circus theme in the late 1880s and 1890s, just as his popularity as a commercial artist soared. Fin-de-siècle Paris hosted an assortment of professional circuses, and Lautrec frequented them all. He was personally drawn to circus performers-those colorful equestrians, animal trainers, clowns and acrobats on society's "fringes." It was while undergoing treatment for alcoholism at a sanitarium on the outskirts of Paris in 1899 that Lautrec produced an ambitious group of crayon/chalk drawings of circus figures. These imaginative sketches were drawn entirely from memory, without recourse to preliminary studies. The Lehman horse and rider perform the "pas espagnol", the ambling gait formalized by the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. It was thanks to these circus drawings that Lautrec earned his release from the sanitarium-their impressive handling convinced doctors of his improving health. As Lautrec left the clinic, he is said to have remarked, "I've bought my release with my drawings.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

With illustrated editions of the Bible, Dante's Inferno, Cervantes' Don Quixote, Poe's The Raven, and a host of other classics popular at mid-century, he was the reigning master of the coffee-table book.
