The walls are nearly eight feet in thick¬ness, and contain within them a gallery for fire-arms. In the lower part of the Eagle Tower it is said that Edward II., the first Saxon Prince of Wales, was born, and a little dark room is shewn as the birth-place. But this is known to be only tradition, as the same tower was not erected until after the Prince was born, he himself superintending the building of it. Before we leave Carnarvon we must not forget that it is entitled to much attention, on account of its antiquarian and historical associations. It is also a convenient spot for making a stay.

alb3629300 Charles Baudelaire. Artist: Étienne Carjat (French, Fareins 1828-1906 Paris). Printer: Goupil et Cie (French, active 1850-84). Date: ca. 1863.Although the great French poet Baudelaire famously declared photography to be "the refuge of every would-be painter, every painter too ill-endowed or too lazy to complete his studies," he posed before the camera several times. This striking portrait of the brooding poet by Carjat is perhaps the best known, for it was published in the widely distributed series entitled Galerie contemporaine, littéraire, artistique. The Galerie contemporaine is a high point in photographic publishing. Issued in parts from 1876 to 1884 by the firm of Goupil, the series contained 241 portraits of leading figures from the worlds of art, literature, music, science, and politics by a host of Parisian photographers. The illustrations were printed as woodburytypes-a photomechanical process that reproduced the continuous tones of photography but did so with printer's ink. The speed and economy with which woodburytypes could be printed, as well as their permanence (unlike traditional photographic processes that were subject to fading), made them a highly practical substitute for albumen silver prints in book publication or other situations where mass production was desirable. alb3628396 Christ Preaching. Artist: After Federico Zuccaro (Zuccari) (Italian, Sant'Angelo in Vado 1540/42-1609 Ancona). Dimensions: 9-1/8 x 13-7/8 in. (23.2 x 35.2 cm). Date: 16th century. The present drawing is a copy after a fresco of circa 1564 (now destroyed) executed by Federico Zuccaro in the Grimani chapel of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice. The fresco is known through an engraving by Cornelis Cort and several drawings made after the fresco. The engraving and two drawings similar to this one (Musée du Louvre, Paris no. 4413, and GDSU, Florence, no. 11036 F) are illustrated and discussed as works of Luca Longhi (1507-1580) by Paola della Pergola ( 'Riferimenti a Luca Longhi.' In Bolletino d'arte, vol. 40, 1955, p. 83-84). A painting attributed to Luca Longhi in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (no. 90) is thought to be after a lost drawing by Zuccaro for this fresco and shows Christ in profile. A replica of Longhi's painting, attributed to Pedro Campagna (Kempner) is in the National Gallery of London (see catalogue, 1929, p. 48, no. 1249).Attribution History: In 1895, the drawing was attributed to Tintoretto (see references M.M.A). Some time before 1939, the attribution was changed to the School of Tintoretto (J.M.B). On May 29, 1939, Dr. and Mrs. Hans Tietze orally attributed the drawing to Girolamo Muziano (1528-1592). A detail drawing by Muziano in the Albertina, Vienna, shows a slightly different composition of the left side of this drawing (see Ugo da Como, 'Girolamo Muziano', 1930). The attribution was changed from School of Tintoretto to Girolamo Muziano (H.B.W. 1940). The drawing, previously entitled, The Adoration of the Savior, and attributed to Girolamo Muziano is now entitled Christ Preaching and attributed to Federico Zuccaro, copy after (Claus Virch, May 1961). alb4859409 After the death of King Edward IV of England (1442-1483), his brother Richard (1452-1485), Duke of Gloucester, took advantage of the fact of being guardian of the heirs to the throne and Lord Protector of the Realm, to imprison his nephews, Edward V (1470-1483) and his brother Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York (1473-1483). The princes were murdered by one of Richard's hired assassins, smothering them with a pillow while they slept. Richard had ordered Robert Brakenbury, Constable of the Tower of London, kill his two nephews, but Brakenbury refused. Richard then gave the order to Sir James Tyrrell (ca. 1455-1502), who with the help of three accomplices, named William Slater, John Digton and Forrest, executed the murder. Duke Richard proclaimed himself king in 1483, reigning as Richard III from 26 June 1483 to 22 August 1485. The corpses were buried at the foot of the staircase in the Tower of London, at shallow depths, where they were found on July 1674. The sons of Edward IV. alb3667762 Zaragoza, Patio de la Casa Conocida con el Nombre de los Infantes. Artist: Charles Clifford (Welsh, 1819-1863). Dimensions: Image: 30.9 × 42.5 cm (12 3/16 × 16 3/4 in.)Mount: 42.3 × 58 cm (16 5/8 × 22 13/16 in.). Date: 1860.This print is from an album of fifty-six plates entitled "Photographic Memories of the Trip of Their Majesties and Highnesses to the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Aragon," which originally belonged to Antoine d'Orléans, duc de Montpensier, a great collector and patron of photographers and the brother-in-law of Queen Isabella II.The photograph represents the patio balcony in the house where the infante Luis Antonio, a son of the eighteenth-century king of Spain, Philip V, was forced to retire after marrying a woman beneath his station. Not long after Clifford's visit, many pieces of the extraordinary plateresque decoration were removed and sold abroad. While the photograph documents the deteriorated state of the house, its unsettling quality emanates less from desuetude than from the mysterious curtain at the right, which in effect decapitates the knight in the cartouche below. In the work of a photographer whose ideal was complete and generalized description, the curtain in the dark-cornered vignette might be considered a mistake. But as Clifford consistently constructed telling images from selected details, the eccentric picture may well be a poignant commentary on the demise of the noble arts and on the personal obscurity of the banished infante. alb3629069 Landscape No. 25. Artist: Marsden Hartley (American, Lewiston, Maine 1877-1943 Ellsworth, Maine). Dimensions: 12 x 12 in. (30.5 x 30.5cm). Date: ca. 1908-9.Following their first meeting, in 1909, Alfred Stieglitz immediately offered Marsden Hartley an exhibition at his gallery "291," where the most avant-garde European and American artists made their American debuts. The show consisted of thirty-three landscapes of Maine, the artist's home state, including a series of fifteen paintings entitled Songs of Autumn; Landscape Number 25 likely belongs to that group. In this painting Hartley emulates the tight neo-Impressionist brushwork of the nineteenth-century Italian painter Giovanni Segantini, who he said was "the only artist who has ever put a mountain spirit on canvas.". alb3602631 Design for a Mural with the Battle between the Gods of Olympus and the Giants. Artist: Paul Chenavard (French, Paris 1808-1895 Paris). Dimensions: Sheet: 25 × 42 11/16 in. (63.5 × 108.5 cm). Date: ca. 1840-80.Large design, probably a presentation drawing, consisting of four sheets. The architectural details are painted on separate sheets and pasted on top. The drawing shows a design for a monumental mural depicting a battle between the Gods of Olympus and the Giants. In line with Chenavard's other works this is probably an allegorical depiction of a deeper, philosophical theme. The composition of the sheet seems closely related to Chenavard's project for the Pantheon in Paris where he proposed to paint a monumental cycle entitled 'The Philosophy of History'. Napoleon III cancelled the commission however and the cartoons were shown only ones in 1855 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. They are now kept in the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lyon. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
