alb3606590 Don Gaspar de Guzmán (1587-1645), Count-Duke of Olivares. Artist: Attributed to Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez) (Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid); and/or Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo (Spanish, Cuenca ca. 1612-1667 Madrid). Dimensions: 50 1/4 x 41 in. (127.6 x 104.1 cm). Date: ca. 1635.The Count-Duke of Olivares was Philip IV's powerful prime minister between 1621 and 1643. This picture is either a preliminary model or a reduced variant of a large equestrian portrait of the count-duke (Prado, Madrid), painted perhaps in celebration of a victory over the French at the border town of Fuenterrabía in 1638. In full armor and holding a baton, he is shown as a victorious commander. His horse holds a dressage position known as a levade. The Count-Duke of Olivares was Philip IV's powerful prime minister between 1621 and 1643. Although of extremely fine quality and incorporating differences, this picture is probably a reduced variant of a life-size equestrian portrait of the count-duke in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. It may have been painted by his son-in-law, Juan Bautista del Mazo--possibly with Velazquez's intervention. Olivares is shown in full armor and holding a baton, as a victorious commander. His horse holds a dressage position known as a levade. In the background smoke rises from the battlefield. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Attributed to Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez). and / or Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo.

alb3684517 The Supper at Emmaus. Artist: Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez) (Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid). Dimensions: 48 1/2 x 52 1/4 in. (123.2 x 132.7 cm). Date: 1622-23.The picture may have been painted in Seville, where Velázquez was trained, or in Madrid, where he moved in 1623. The realism of the figures, the strong dramatic light, and the attention to still-life details recall the work of Caravaggio, which Velázquez would have known in Seville through copies. Christ is shown at the moment when he is recognized by two disciples following his resurrection, as "he took bread, blessed and broke it, and handed it to them.". alb3618223 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez) (Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid). Dimensions: 27 x 21 3/4 in. (68.6 x 55.2 cm). Date: ca. 1630-35.This portrait is a study for the figure who gazes out from the far right of Velázquez's Surrender of Breda (ca. 1635, Museo del Prado, Madrid). That large canvas, depicting one of the most famous military successes in Philip IV's reign, integrates a number of portraits. Although it has been argued that this man is none other than the artist, scholars have questioned whether the painter would have dared to include himself as a bystander at the historic military victory. The surviving evidence suggests that Velázquez rarely made studies for his larger works and did not make oil studies for the other figures in Surrender at Breda. However, a preparatory step such as this work would have made it easier for the artist to include an image of himself in the picture. The canvas may have remained in his studio; a "portrait of Diego Velázquez, clothes to be finished" is listed in a posthumous inventory of the artist's possessions.
