Fronts on the beach are a lot of boats and gondolas, as it were guarded by the two patron saints of Venice, where the two almost twenty meter high granite pillars are dedicated, we see in the foreground of the picture. The western column in the picture to the left, wearing a bronze statue of St Theodore, who was once considered the patron saint of the city. He is standing on a crocodile and looking far over the busy vehicles lagoon. On the other column, which was built in the 15th century, is a winged lion, the symbol of Mark the Evangelist, after whom the church of St Mark and St Mark's Square are named, and being called up to the present as the patron of Venice.

alb3603771 Taweret Amulet. Dimensions: h. 5.1 cm (2 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 26-29. Date: 664-332 B.C..Taweret and other closely related goddesses were created from a blending of lion, hippo, crocodile, and human attributes. The three animals were some of the fiercest species found in ancient Egypt and combining their strengths produced a most potent deity and therefore amulet. Taweret's particular responsibility was the protection of women during pregnancy and childbirth. She is often portrayed leaning on a sa symbol. Her representation was sometimes used on tomb walls or funerary equipment to protect the deceased during rebirth. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3624523 Enthroned Buddha Attended by the Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. Culture: Indonesia (Java). Dimensions: H. 11 1/2 in. (29.2 cm); W. 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm); D. 5 in. (12.7 cm). Date: second half of the 10th century. This ensemble, consisting of seven separately cast pieces, is one of the most elaborate of known surviving Javanese bronzes. The central figure, his hands raised in teaching the dharma, can be identified either as Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, or as Vairocana, his transcendent manifestation. The lion emerging from the center of the main base refers to the Buddha's clan name. Seated on the left is Avalokiteshvara, supported by his vehicle the calf-bull Nandin, and on the right is Vajrapani, accompanied by his mount, a makara (mythical crocodile-elephant hybrid). The figures' slender proportions and angular features mark this triad as a product of the Early Eastern Javanese period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3627953 Sistrum of the Chantress Tapenu. Dimensions: H. 36.1 × W. 8.4 × D. 5.5 cm (14 3/16 × 3 5/16 × 2 3/16 in.). Date: 1070-600 BC.A sistrum is an ancient Egyptian percussion instrument that was shaken during religious ceremonies and when coming into the presence of a deity. It is thought to have imitated the sound of papyrus stalks being shaken, echoing an ancient rite connected with the myth in which the god Horus was raised in secret in a papyrus marsh. The handle of this sistrum is made in the form of the "Bat emblem" which was associated with the goddess Hathor, who was the patroness of music. The arc of the sistrum is decorated with a vulture whose spread wings hold extended feathers; on the sides of the arc just above where it fits into the handle are depicted images of the goddess Meret. The handle of the sistrum names the Chantress of Sobek of Kheny, Tapenu, justified. Kheny is the ancient town of the area of Gebel Silisila, the great sandstone quarry site, in Upper Egypt. Many manifestations of Sobek, the crocodile god, were worshipped in this region. The sistrum may date from the late Ramesside Period onward. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3600934 The Female Pharaoh Hatshepsut. Dimensions: H. 170 × W. 41 × D. 90 cm, 620.5 kg (66 15/16 × 16 1/8 × 35 7/16 in., 1368 lb.) (as reassembled). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1479-1458 B.C..This graceful, life-size statue depicts Hatshepsut in female attire, but she wears the nemes headcloth, a royal attribute usually reserved for the reigning king. In the columns of text inscribed beside her legs on the front of the throne, she has already adopted the throne name Maatkare, but her titles and epithets are still feminine. Thus, she is "Lady of the Two Lands" and "Bodily Daughter of Re." On the back of the throne, part of an enigmatic scene is preserved which probably consisted of two back-to-back goddesses. The goddess has the body of a pregnant hippopotamus with feline legs and a crocodile tail appears behind her legs. Although this resembles Taweret, the goddess who protects women and children, it is probably Ipi, a royal protector who appears in the same position on a statue of the Seventeenth Dynasty king Sebekemsaf I (ca. 1575 B.C.) in the British Museum. In the early 1920s the Museum's Egyptian Expedition excavated numerous fragments of the statue near Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahri in western Thebes. The torso, however, had been found in 1869 and was in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. In 1998, the Leiden torso and the Met's portions of the statue were reunited for the first time since the original was destroyed in about 1460 B.C. The statue now travels between the two Museums and is currently on view in Leiden until 2016. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3628440 Autopsy of the First Crocodile Onboard, Upper Egypt. Artist: Ernest Benecke (German, born England, 1817-1894). Dimensions: Image: 17.5 x 21.3 cm (6 7/8 x 8 3/8 in.)Mount: 31.5 x 45.1 cm (12 3/8 x 17 3/4 in.). Date: 1852.This is perhaps the world's first traveler snapshot, made on the deck of a traditional Nile vessel almost forty years before hand-held cameras, shutters, and fast film made the genre a possibility. In 1852, whether for business or simply on a young man's grand tour, Benecke traveled throughout Egypt and the Mediterranean with a camera and a surprisingly humane spirit. The photographers who traveled there shortly before and after him, including Maxime Du Camp, Félix Teynard, and J. B. Greene, focused almost exclusively on the ancient monuments and landscape. Benecke, instead, documented the contemporary world with such keen sensitivity that his photographs, beyond their ethnographic value, present intimate and unaffected portraits of the region's inhabitants. alb3624297 Fragment of an Animal Carpet. Dimensions: Rug: L. 30 11/16 in. (78 cm)W. 21 7/16 in. (54.5 cm). Date: late 16th century. The theme of fantastic and grotesque animals was popular during the last quarter of sixteenth century in Mughal India. This carpet fragment of woolen pile on cotton warp and weft is one of the rarest types of Mughal carpets. A goat protrudes from the mouth of a lion while overlapping birds reciprocally face each other against a red colored background typical of Mughal carpets. The overall scheme is enigmatic with sparse foliage between the creatures. It seems to have been inspired by the Indian makara-torana an arch in which scrolls issue from the mouth of a hybrid elephant-headed crocodile. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
