Gases from outer space arrived on Earth during a dinosaur-killing asteroid strike 65 million years ago, and survived in molecular cages called buckyballs or fullerenes, researchers reported on Tuesday. The fullerene molecule, seen in these computer images, is a hollow, cage-like structure typically made of 60 or more carbon atoms which encapsulate extraterrestrial noble gas atoms (such as helium) inside. The bottom view shows a broken bond, or open "window", with an atom moving out through the window.SSF/MMR
