hiphotos540802 Sarah Bernhardt as Phedre in Racine's 'Phaedra', negative about 1874; print and mount 1880s. Additional Info: Nadar's photograph of Sarah Bernhardt (French, 1844-1923) as Phèdre is from a collector's album of cabinet card portraits of Bernhardt by various photographers. A famous actress in the late 1800s, the "Divine Sarah" was a brilliant self-promoter at a time when the basis of celebrity was shifting from the political figure to the theatrical performer. Bernhardt pioneered the use of new technologies to disseminate her image: she was one of the most photographed women in the world, and the first major stage actress to star in films. She made several recordings of famous theatrical dialogues including a reading from Racine's Phèdre at Thomas Edison's home. A recognizable figure, Bernhardt--often depicted in theatrical costume--endorsed commercial products. Contemporary with this cabinet card, her image appeared on cigarette cards, an early form of product promotion.//

hiphotos532019 Mdlle. Sarah Bernhardt as Gilberte, in "Frou-Frou," at the Gaiety Theatre, 1880. London stage production. '"Chez moi! Chez moi!" - Act 5 In "Frou-Frou" another order of sympathies is awakened by the most eminently sympathetic actress of the age Her conduct in abandoning her husband and child seems to English judges utterly indefensible An ordinary "Frou-Frou" might fail to move us very deeply - even by the tearfullest of voices and the most skilful simulation of the symptoms of advanced pulmonary disease. But Madame Sarah Bernhardt is not an ordinary "Frou-Frou." As the thoughtless and capricious coquette she may not entirely satisfy those who look in the earlier aspects of the character for exuberant vivacity and entrain. But the repentant and dying "Frou-Frou" at once compels our pity and our love. In expiring accents she herself murmurs, Vous voyez, toujours la même. Mon fils! vous me pardonnez, n'est-ce pas? Frou-frou! Pauvre//

hiphotos240821 Sarah Bernhardt Reclining on a Divan, Reading, c. 1885-1890. Perhaps the most famous actress in the history of the theater, Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was one of the most magnetic personalities of her time and was known by her adoring fans as "the Divine Sarah." Jules Clairin was the favored portraitist of the actress, and depicted her in various roles in more than 100 paintings. In this intimate drawing, the international idol is depicted off stage, probably in her exotically decorated Parisian atelier that overflowed with lush palms, patterned carpets, fringed throws, and Asian bibelots. Quiet in her reverie, the reclining Bernhardt is supported by a tiger skin, the drama of her life momentarily voiced by the roaring animal.//

hiphotos240823 Sarah Bernhardt in "Zaire" by Voltaire, 1874. Carjat’s portrait studio, like those of Nadar and Mathew Brady, made its reputation on celebrity portraiture. An important segment of that market was the theatrical portrait. Thanks to photographs and engravings made from them and published in newspapers, performers like French actress Sarah Bernhardt gained international fame. "The Divine Sarah" is seen here at age 30 costumed for a play about star-crossed lovers set during the Crusades. Like Nadar, Carjat preferred plain backdrops to let the sitters’ poses, expressions, and costumes tell their story. The long exposure times, however, limited the theatricality of their poses.//
