UIS5091618 The Moon, 1851. Daguerreotype by John Adams Whipple (1823-1891) and William Cranch Bond. Whipple, a Boston daguerreotypist collaborated with Bond, an astronomer to produce photographs of the Moon between 1847 and 1852. Their images, made using the Great Refractor at Harvard University, Massachusetts, were remarkable for their clarity and detail, and won the prize for technical excellence in photography at the Great Exhibition held at the Crystal Palace in 1851. In the Daguerreotype process, invented by Louis Daguerre (1789-1851) in 1839, a picture made on a silver surface sensitized with iodine was developed by exposure to mercury vapour. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
