LLM8668754 The "Carolina" Affair. In 1837, when part of Canada was in a state of rebellion, the American steamer Carolina (or as some historians give it, Caroline) was engaged in gun-running operations. As the local authorities were unable or unwilling to stop her, Colonel MacNab sent a small party led by Commander A Drew, RN to destroy the vessel. He managed to take her in a particularly dashing action, cutting her away from her moorings under the guns of Fort Schlosser. After removing her people, he set her on fire and let her drift over Niagara Falls, a huge blazing torch, the awe-inspiring sight of which had a great moral effect on the rebels and their sympathisers. INC11712575 The precise, tightly grouped patterns on this textile were created by binding narrow pleats of fabric and then immersing the entire cloth in indigo. The binding process for a work of this size and complexity would take months to complete. This textile was purchased in Foumban, Cameroon, by Clara Gebauer, a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who lived in Cameroon as part of the German Baptist Mission. In the 1930s, the royal capital of Foumban was the center of an evolving art market directed at expatriates. The signature in one corner of this textile suggests that a skilled craftsperson made it within that context.

The driver had to fill up the coal himself and make sure that the combustion functioned as it should. Due to a lack of fuel during the Second World War, natural gas played a major role in keeping transport running.

BDL9031230 Codex Selden (Codex Añute): Mixtec pictorial manuscript ( ñee ñuhu ), 1556 × 1560s. MS. Arch. Selden. A.2, p. 7. Starting at bottom (continuation of p. 6). Band I (left to right). Rest of the offerings brought by F 6 Monkey and her husband 10 Wind to the goddess 9 Grass 'Death': second necklace made of gold beads in the form of hooks, a red chili with a heart and two plates of gold, two checkered objects, apparently made of cloth, but adorned with jade, a 'Death Serpent' with two bone awls, and a complete dress made up of a huipil, skirt, and quechquemitl. The letter is adorned with a fringe of white Xonecuillis on a black ground, the same as the one worn by the goddess 9 Grass, which is a characteristic symbol of her (see her depiction on p. 6-IV). After the offerings comes a date: day 10 Wind of the year 10 Reed (1035), which might refer to a day in the past. Three women and four men , and a fifth man playing the tepoznatli (in the centre), participate in a dance which takes place on this date. Among the dancers, we can recognise: F 9 Grass 'Death', M 11 Wind 'Bloody Tiger', F 6 Monkey 'Serpent Quechquemitl', an old man and an old woman, and a man wearing the mask and beard of Ehecatl, the wind god. The other male is not identifiable. They all carry flowers in their hands and, in general, a woman alternates with a man. After the dance, M 11 Wind and F 6 Monkey get married by bathing together in the River of Corn, on the day 7 Flower of the year 12 House (1037). Band II (right to left). A number of objects is presented to the couple: a white huipil with undulating lines, red dots, and snail symbol; two small cloths similarly decorated with red lines; other black dotted cloths with red border and fringe, one of them having a red bow and the other what appears to be a knotted feather; a xicolli or red tunic, with featherd fringe and cords to tie it, ending in pearls; a similar xicolli, decorated besides with an ear of corn, which seeCodex Selden (Codex Añute): Mixtec pictorial manuscript ( ñee ñuhu ), 1556 × 1560s. MS to be a symbol of royal power, as respresented in other codices; and finally two feathered headdresses. One of these has a ball of down, an eagle feather, and three quetzal feathers (which is the plumage of the warrior), and the other is set in gold, with three dark feathers and three of the quetzal. The year following the ceremonial bath and the offerings, the elder from Belching Mountain, M 10 Lizard 'Ruffled Hair-Jade Axe-Eagle Down-Flaming Mirror-Arrow', calls two ambassadors named M 2 Flower 'Xiuhcoatl Eye' and M 3 Alligator 'Jade Pheasant'. 2 Flower and 3 Alligator are consecutive days in the tonalpohualli; they both belong to the seventh 13-day week, which starts with 1 Rain dedicated to Tlaloc. These men might also be twins. The elder hires them to take the princess 6 Monkey 'Serpent Quechquemitl' to the place which can be called Xipe Bundle, the town of his wife 11 Wind. Band III (left to right). The ambassadors leave on the day 9 Serpent of the year 13 Rabbit (1038). M 3 Alligator 'Jade Pheasant', who is in front, carries a staff decorated with jades and quetzal plumes; the part where he grasps it is covered with cloth or paper decorated with red stripes. He is carrying some branches with leaves and flowers. M 2 Flower 'Xiuhcoatl Eye' follows behind him; his staff is decorated with a solar half disk and topped with an adornment of quetzal plumes and a flint knife. He carries the princess 6 Monkey on his back (her head is visible). As they pass through the towns called Hill of the Moon and Hill of the Bumble-bee, the lords of these places M 6 Lizard 'Twisted Hill-Cotton(?)' and M 2 Alligator 'Cacaxtli-Cotton (?)' speak insultingly to them, that is, as sharply as flint knives (note flint knives added to the shapes symbolising their speech, which come out of their mouths). Band IV (right to left). The princess 6 Monkey 'Serpent Quechquemitl' arrives at the town of Skull and complains before the goddess 9 Grass 'Jawbone' of the treatment she has received.

The Amir, seated in the centre in a splendid white European-style uniform, is photographed during a conference with Major Cavagnari. Cavagnari was about to take up the post of British envoy in Kabul as part of the peace the British had forced on the Afghans after a year of fighting. However, widespread resentment at the British presence led to an attack on the British residency in Kabul on 3 September 1879. Despite fighting bravely Cavagnari and his small escort were killed. This in turn led the British to resume the war to avenge the deaths of their soldiers. The full title of the photograph is 'Mr Jenkyns, Major Cavagnari CIS, Amir Yakub Khan, Habeebula Mustafii, General Daod Shah in Conference'. A pioneer of photography in India, John Burke began working in Peshawar, as an assistant to the commercial photographer William Baker. Baker took up photography on retiring from the British Army in 1861 and Burke himself had worked as an apothecary in the Royal Artillery. When Baker stopped working in 1873 Burke carried on, recording the evolution of the Indian Raj in the late nineteenth century. PIX4603537 The Orion MPVC module - artist view - Orion spacecraft exploded view - Ecorchee view of the module lives in Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. An artist's impression of the Orion spacecraft and its components including ESA's service module. The Crew Module sits atop the service module and can hold four astronauts and cargo. This the only part of Orion designed to reenter Earth's atmosphere: the heatshield protects it against the intense heat of reentry at 32,000 km/h. The European Service Module (ESM) provides electricity, propulsion, air and water, and forms part of the vehicle's structure, like a car chassis. More information about the module is given on separate pages to the left. A Crew Module Adapter (CMA) connects the capsule to the ESM. It houses electronic equipment for communications, power and control, and includes a bridge that connects electrical, data and fluid systems between the main modules. A number of elements are required only during launch and are discarded shortly before entering space. The Spacecraft Adapter attachments Orion to its launch vehicle. The Spacecraft Adapter Jettisonable Fairings offer aerodynamic protection during launch. When the vehicle is high enough above Earth, the fairings are jettisoned to fall into the ocean. As Orion ferries people to space and back, safety is paramount. If anything were to go wrong during launch, an abort will propel the crew capsule up and away from the danger, returning it to the ground by parachute. The Launch Aort System forms the nose of the complete launcher and has rockets of its own that fire in an emergency. It, too, is discarded at altitude

The women won't take the place of men who sweep the Precinct though the do have equipment for picking up litter. "We think there has been a lack of the woman's touch in the Precinct. We want to put a sparkle into it and we feel they can clean and polish better than men. They will be cleaning rails, metal supports, litter bins, subways, statues and any tiled surfaces," he said. 13th April 1970

LLM11720825 Street in Tokio, Japan. Tokio (formerly called Yedo) is the capital of Japan, and is an hour's ride by rail from Yokohama. It was thrown open to foreign travel only as recently as 1869, but it has made up for lost time by assuming many European characteristics. It now has numerous buildings constructed on the European style. Foreign dress and the European mode of arranging the hair have also been very extensively adopted. Electric lights and telephones no longer excite wonder here. Tram-cars and omnibusses may be also seen, althong! the vehicle most used is the Jinrikisha, specimens of which are visible at the left of this illustration. In these a man places himself between the shafts and plays the part of a horse for as many hours and for as long a distance as the traveller can bear to be drawn by him. The size of Tokio is enormous, almost equalling that of London, and its population is nearly one and a half millions. The "sights" of such a city, as may be easily imagined, can not be exhausted so soon as the sight-seer himself. Numerous and interesting temples, the Mikado's Palace, the Imperial University, the Arsenal, the famous Ueno Park, the admirable Museum of Japanese Antiquities, these together with the fascinating shops of Curios, Lacquer Work and Bronzes, furnish material for many days of constant pleasure and employment. There are few sidewalks in Tokio, the streets themselves being used freely, and not without danger, by foot-passengers and vehicles. Every omnibus and coaches of all descriptions carry horns, which the drivers blow to warn people to clear the way. Extensive conflagrations frequently take place here, for most of the buildings are made of wood. Earthquakes are of common occurrence, and have occasioned at times enormous loss of life.
