Henry Swinburne (1743-1803), English travel writer; The Northumberland gentleman Henry Swinburne arrived in Rome in 1778. He was making a Grand Tour (as it was known in the 18th century) to view Roman antiquities in Italy. To mark his visit, he chose the fashionable painter Pompeo Batoni to paint his portrait. The natural expression, finely painted features, and elegant appearance of the portrait demonstrate Batoni's skill. The picture was originally intended to have an oval frame;
