Nicholas Saunderson, or Sanderson (1682-1739), lost his eyesight through smallpox in infancy, but this did not prevent him from becoming first a mathematical teacher at Canterbury, and later Professor of Mathematics (1728). His 'Algebra' (1740) and other mathematical writings were published after his death. He is shown here holding an armillary sphere, which was used to determine the locations of celestial objects. ©SSPL/Science Museum
