COU65735 The author of this work, whose identity remains unknown, is simply designated after the subject of one of his paintings (today held in Florence), which depicts the shepherd Paris deciding which Greek goddess is the most beautiful. Here, the same master has represented a religious scene: the annunciation to Mary that she will bear the child of God. Such a small-scale work was probably made as a devotional object for the household. The elaborate architectural elements manage to portray Mary both inside her home and outside, in a type of enclosed courtyard.

COU225331 This triptych is an outstanding example of the type of portable paintings produced for private patrons in fourteenth-century Italy. Its scale and subject matter encouraged a personal meditation on the life of Christ. The Florentine Bernardo Daddi began his career as an apprentice of Giotto, who is credited with introducing a more naturalist style, expression and sense of volume in Italian painting.Daddi’s own workshop was prolific and specialised in small devotional tabernacles. This triptych ranks amongst the finest of his production: the shimmering gold and expensive pigments, combined with Daddi’s delight in rendering lively details, create a work of rare beauty and invention.

XOS9017630 The Virgin Mary, enthroned as Queen of Heaven, is surrounded by angels, some in attitudes of prayer, others playing musical instruments and singing. Twisting in his mother's lap, the infant Christ reaches for a lily, a symbol of Mary's purity, and clutches a goldfinch, an allusion to his future Crucifixion. The scene is rich in detail and saturated color. Gherardo Starnina delighted in sumptuous surface effects, such as the brocaded fabrics, the marble footstool, and the patterned floor tiles. These decorative tendencies, together with the willowy forms of the figures, reflect Starnina's extended sojourn in Spain, where he had absorbed the local refined stylistic approaches. He probably produced this work sometime after his return to his native Florence, after June 1401. Before being identified as the documented Florentine painter Gherardo Starnina, this artist was known simply as the "Master of the Bambino Vispo" (Master of the Lively Child), a soubriquet which refers to his penchant for painting Madonnas with a wriggling Christ Child, as in this painting. By Gherardo Starnina (Master of the Bambino Vispo) (Italian, (Florentine), about 1360 - before 1413)

XOS9017793 The Virgin Mary, hieratic and still, looks out toward the viewer while gently supporting Christ with her left arm. The smiling infant gazes lovingly toward her and playfully stretches out his arm, grabbing the edge of her gold-trimmed, blue cloak. The star over the Madonna's forehead refers to her title \"Star of the Sea, \" the meaning of the Jewish form of her name, Miriam. The Virgin's rigid and formal pose reflects the icon tradition of the Byzantine Empire. The painting's format and the ornamental scroll on either side of the Madonna also find close parallels in Byzantine icons. But unlike Byzantine work, the Master of Saint Cecilia emphasizes the intimate connection between the Madonna and Child, embodied at the Virgin's breast where her right hand gently cradles Christ's tiny left hand. This humanizing tendency would become increasingly prominent in Western Europe and a hallmark of Renaissance imagery of the Madonna and Child. By Master of St. Cecilia (Italian, active about 1290 - 1320)
