UIS5070755 Frederick Treves, English surgeon, 1900. Chromolithograph by Vincent Brooks Day and Son Ltd of a caricature by Leslie Ward, better known as Spy, from 'Vanity Fair' magazine. Frederick Treves (1853-1923) studied medicine at the London Hospital and was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He is famous for his association with Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. When Treves first laid eyes on Merrick he thought him 'the most disgusting specimen of humanity, degraded and perverted in its twisted form'. He took Merrick to the London Hospital to document his deformities, and arranged to show him to the Pathological Society of London for diagnosis. Merrick was pronounced incurable and Treves later lost contact with him. Dimensions (overall): 370mm x 240mm. ©SSPL/Science Museum
