UIG1574863 A view of the Capitol after the conflagration of the 24th August 1814. A view from the southeast of the fire-damaged U.S. Capitol building, a result of the War of 1812. On August 24, 1814, British general Robert Ross led his troops into Washington with strict orders to burn only public buildings. On August 25, a tornado blew through the city, bringing torrential rains that quelled both the fires and the British desire to pursue further action in Washington.

LLM11720758 Treasury Building, Washington, D. C. The Interesting and elegant building, the United States Treasury, one of the fine adornments of the National Capital, flanks the Executive Mansion on the east, having the Capitol as its vis-a-vis at the farther end of Pennsylvania Avenue. The immense pile is lonic in its architecture, with a colonnade on the east front, and porticos on the other three sides. It is 500 feet long and 280 feet wide. It was modelled after the Temple of Minerva at Athens, and cost six million dollars. The chief sight of the Treasury Building is the great Cash Room, lined throughout with rich marbles. Other departments of interest are the Note Redemption Room, and especially the Silver Vaults, containing coin and bullion to the value of hundreds of millions of dollars. Other interesting exhibits, which do not excite the cupidity of the visitor, are the portraits of the more prominent Secretaries of the Treasury, and an exhibit a tolerably large one-of counterfeit money. PFH1171938 Socialist Realism is a style of realistic art which developed under Socialism in the Soviet Union and became a dominant style in other communist countries. Socialist Realism is a teleologically-oriented style having as its purpose the furtherance of the goals of socialism and communism. Although related, it should not be confused with Social Realism, a type of art that realistically depicts subjects of social concern. Unlike Social Realism, Socialist Realism generally glorifies the ideology of the communist state.
