Oblt Friedrich Wittenberg, (born 28 October 1918 Wildeshausen, Oldenburg) was Commander of the German submarine U-856 from 19 August 1943 until 7 April 1944. The U-856 was sunk on 7 April 1944 in the North Atlantic east of New York, in position 40.18N, 62.22W, by depth charges from the US destroyer USS Champlin and the US destroyer escort USS Huse. There were 27 dead and 28 survivors. Wittenberg became a prisoner-of-war. (The vertical marks on the print are a result of the negative not being dried correctly, so the photograph may have been developed and printed aboard the U-boat). ©SSPL/Nigel Dobinson
