These glass discs were used by Dr Stephen Demainbray (1710-1782), science lecturer and private astronomer to King George III, in his lectures on colour. Demainbray toured Britain and France between 1749 and 1754, giving public lectures on natural philosophy. In 1754, he became one of the many scientists advertising courses of lectures in London. In lecturing on the topic of colour, he was able to glorify Isaac Newton's (1642-1727)æ theories on the spectrum, and treat the theories of his rivals 'in a candid manner'. ©SSPL/Science Museum

UIS5083286 Woman in a bonnet, c 1850. A hand-coloured daguerreotype portrait of a rather severe-looking woman in bonnet and shawl, taken by an unknown photographer in about 1855. In 1839, the Daguerreotype, invented by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre [1787-1851], became the first photographic process to be announced to the public. A highly-polished silver surface on a copper plate was sensitised to light by exposing it to iodine fumes. After exposing the plate in a camera it was developed with mercury vapour. Daguerreotypes are unique images which may appear as a positive or negative depending on how light hits the surface. æ ©SSPL/National Media Museum

UIS5079983 Wild West show, c 1905. A snapshot photograph of a group of mounted Native Americans, taken by an unknown photographer in about 1905.æ The factories and terraces visible behind the tents in the background suggest that this photograph was taken at a Wild West Show. These popular shows toured America and Europe at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. They featured cowboys and Native Americans in mock battles, displays of horsemanship and famous celebrities such as Annie Oakley. The most famous Wild West Shows were those of William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody [1846-1917 ]. Such shows helped to mythologise the American West. Debut de la photographie populaire.
