2GDXJPE August 15, 2021, Dar Es Salaam, Mkuranga, Tanzania: A nurse leads a patient from the surgery room as DALIN BAKARI NGALANGA waits following trachoma surgery at the Mkuranga District Hospital near Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The government and IMA World Health have cooperated over the past 10 years to nearly eliminate blindness as a result of trachoma infections in this region. The infection causes a swelling that turns eyelashes inward damaging the cornea which ultimately results in blindness. The surgery and a course of antibiotics restores sight to these patients.
