RFH4PM Mother and Child with a Rose Scarf. Artist: Mary Cassatt (American, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1844-1926 Le Mesnil-Théribus, Oise). Dimensions: 46 x 35 3/4 in. (116.8 x 89.5 cm). Date: ca. 1908. Cassatt painted this picture toward the end of her career, and she completed a number of studies and sketches before she arrived at her final composition. The figures, although posed asymmetrically, form a pyramid in the classical manner. The interplay of vertical and horizontal lines in the background maintains the symmetry.
