The Tree of the Moon or the Arbor Argentum, and the fact that the hermaphrodite s tands on a crescent Moon, indicates that this stage in the alchemical process marks the perfection of what is called the First Silver. The Hermaphrodite figure, of the merged king and queen indicates that the process is not yet complete, as integration has not taken place.

The winged Mercury with a caduceus in each hand, and the Sun and Moon on either side, stands between what may be taken as Mars (the armed man) and Venus (the woman with the bird), but the deeper symbolism identifies these as Sulphur and Salt, respectively. The two must be separated by Mercury, as one of the primary stages of the alchemical process. The image is linked with the second kay (clavis) of Basil Valentine.
