3D59J55 Diet of Worms. Assembly of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire held in Worms (Germany) from 28 January to 25 May 1521. It was presided over by Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. Its purpose was to address the works of the reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) for his criticism of the Church. Luther was summoned to recant his theses. Between 16 and 18 April, Luther spoke before the Diet, without renouncing his beliefs and vigorously defending his Protestant stance. It was built by order of Emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941) between 1894 and 1905, under the direction of German architect Julius Carl Raschdorff (1823-1914). Also known as the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, it is a monumental German Protestant church and dynastic tomb (House of Hohenzollern).
