In this excerpt from the Parish Register of St Helena towards the foot of the page, which lists burials, the entry for 9th May records; 'Napoleon Bonaparte, late Emperor of France; he died on the 5th instant, at the old House at Longwood, and was interred on Mr Richard Torbett's Estate'. In his will he wrote, "I wish my ashes to rest near the banks of the Seine, in the midst of the French people whom I have loved so dearly."
