The Four Philosophers (1652). This frontispiece from Elias Ashmole’s Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum is a seminal image in the history of Western alchemy. Engraved by Robert Vaughan, it depicts the "Four Pillars" of the hermetic tradition: Geber, Arnold de Villa Nova, Rhasis, and Hermes Trismegistus. They look down from a balcony onto a busy laboratory where alchemical practitioners engage in grinding, heating, and distillation.
