The wings of Icarus are based on the bird-of-paradise pattern. In Greek mythology, Daedalus was the builder of the labyrinth at Knossos in Crete (designed to keep the Minotaur within). To escape his confinement on the island by the king, he designed wings of wax and feathers for himself and his son, Icarus (here). But, Icarus flew too close to the sun. The wax melted, and he fell into the sea (name after the Icarian sea). Daedalus made it to Sicily, where
