3ABFD3A Kelmarsh tunnel, Northamptonshire. 414 metres long, built in 1859 by the London & North Western Railway and linking Northampton with Market Harborough. It finally closed on 16th August 1981. This is the 'up line' tunnel, one of two single track tunnels. Due to the small bore, the tunnels were known as 'the rat-holes' by train drivers. Iron ore from Northamptonshire and coal from Nottinghamshire were hauled by trains on this line as well as aviation fuel in WW2.
