2H1JR5B Cumbre Vieja volcano, La Palma, the Canary Islands. The plume contains a mixture of ash, sulphur dioxide and other volcanic gases. Previous eruption: 1971. The eruption of 2021 began on 19 September. On 26 September Landsat8 captured a natural-colour image (left) of lava flowing through the El Paraiso and Todoque neighbourhoods. Though the inside of the lava flow was hot and molten, the cooler surface crust appears dark in natural-colour imagery. Observations of the infrared wavelengths however (right) reveal the hottest parts of the flow. Optimised/enhanced composite of original NASA imagery
