2HJ41N3 Pont-Neuf, Paris 1853 Charles Meryon French It seems likely that the poet Charles Baudelaire had this print in mind in 1859 when he admired 'the majesty of accumulated stone' in Meryon’s work juxtaposed with 'obelisks of industry, spewing forth.. conglomerations of smoke' and 'prodigious scaffolding of monuments under repair' that overlaid an 'openwork architecture of a paradoxical beauty' upon the city. The seventeenth-century Pont-Neuf—the oldest surviving bridge in Paris at the time—was one such monument undergoing extensive renovation when Meryon made this print.. Pont-Neuf, Paris 371755

2HJ29YA Etchings of Paris; Title page to the suite 1852 Charles Meryon French Charles Meryon was celebrated among artists and collectors alike during the nineteenth century for his etched depictions of Paris. These works combined a documentary eye on the French capital—which was then undergoing dramatic transformation from a medieval to distinctly modern city—with fantastic details that varied from the whimsical to the morbid. His first and best-known album, Eaux-fortes sur Paris, included twenty-two urban views inspired by the novels and poetry of Victor Hugo (1802–1885). This title page opened the s
