After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. The city held out despite famine, disease and cold until a bombardment with heavy siege guns led to its surrender on 28 January 1871. Between 30 November and 3 December a French army of 80,000 men under the command of General Ducrot attempted, without success, to break through the Prussian encirclement.

E0YK85 Aug. 08, 1970 - A Hundred Years Ago The Battle Of Sedan; A hundred years ago, on September 1st, 1870, a decisive battle was fought in the Franco-German War of 1870/71-the battle of Sedan. After Prussian victories at Colombay-Nouilly, mars-la-Tour, Vionville, Gravelotte and St. Privat (August 14th to 18th) the French Rhine-Army under Bazaines retreated to metz. The unsuccessful relief of Metz by the french marshal Mao-Mahon ended with the battle of Sedan. The French army had to surrender-183,000 men were taken prisoner-among them Napoleon III. Photo shows
