2SBJTP2 Marie Tharp (1920-2006) was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer. In the 1950s, she collaborated with geologist Bruce Heezen to produce the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. Tharp's discovery of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge caused a paradigm shift in earth science that led to the acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. This version of the Heezen-Tharp 'World ocean floor' map was handpainted by Heinrich Berann in 1977.

2SBJRN6 A map of the seafloor created using gravity field data. Shades of orange and red represent areas where seafloor gravity is stronger (in milligals) than the global average, a phenomenon that mostly coincides with the location of underwater ridges, seamounts, and the edges of Earth’s tectonic plates. Shades of blue represent areas of lower gravity, corresponding largely with the deepest troughs in the ocean.

REH2YE . Collected reprints / Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories [and] Pacific Oceanographic Laboratories. Oceanography Periodicals.. North Atlantic and INurth Pacific basins Vlthough the North Atlantic and North Pacific Ocean basins are major ocean basins, the sea floor underlying these areas differ considerably from each other. The Atlantic is a much smaller basin (approximately half the area of the Pacific) and as such is influenced more by runoff from the surrounding land masses than is the Pacific. Bottom topography is notably different in the two basins. The Atlantic basin i
