3D5RMJ7 Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum Apollo 13 Exhibit Washington DC // WASHINGTON DC — The Apollo 13 exhibit at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum features the iconic phrase "Houston, we've had a problem" and details the mission's critical carbon dioxide crisis. The display highlights how mission control and astronauts devised a makeshift adapter to fit square command module filters into the lunar module's round openings, a solution known as "fitting a square peg in a round hole." This ingenuity was crucial in safely returning astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swig

3DWC1BT Apollo Lunar Module mockup was a simulation cockpit replicating the lunar lander used during NASA Apollo missions from 1969 to 1972. The archival image records the standing crew configuration, descent engine throttle controls, and distributed attitude rockets designed for vertical landing in the Moon’s thin atmosphere; it was transferred from Grumman Aerospace to the National Air and Space Museum in 1975.

3DWC689 Apollo Lunar Module mockup was a full-scale training replica of the lunar lander cockpit used in NASA Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972. The archival image documents the internal control arrangement for two astronauts managing descent with sixteen attitude rockets and a throttleable descent engine; the simulator was transferred from Grumman Aerospace to the National Air and Space Museum in 1975.

E12WRB Feb. 26, 2012 - Pretty Sharon Mullins of TRW is holding control panel for back-up guidance system that will go to the moon in the lunar module on Apollo 11. The back-up or Abort Guidance System (AGS) has the important role of letting astronauts take over control from the primary guidance system if there is a malfunction on descent or ascent during the lunar voyage. With his control panel the astronauts would take over control for a safe rendezvous with the command service model. The AGS was built by TRW Systems Group for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, lunar module prime contractor.
