This was a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, fought by the joint army of Russian Empire and Kingdom of Romania against the Ottoman Empire. After the Russian army crossed the Danube at Svishtov, it began advancing towards the centre of modern Bulgaria. The Ottoman army led by Osman Pasha, was massed in the fortified city of Plevna. The Russian-Romanian victory on 10 December 1877 was decisive for the outcome of the war.

2H84405 A late 19th Century illustration of the Battle of Mount Tabor fought on 16 April 1799, between French forces commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte and General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, against an Ottoman Army under Abdullah Pasha al-Azm, ruler of Damascus. The battle, a consequence of the siege of Acre during the French Campaign in Egypt and Syria saw the outnumbered French force inflict thousands of casualties. They scattered the remaining forces of the pasha of Damascus, forcing them to abandon their hopes of reconquering Egypt and leaving Napoleon free to carry on the siege of Acre.

He was initially an Austrian soldier, but when faced with the charges of embezzlement fled to Ottoman Bosnia and converted to Islam, joined the Ottoman army where he quickly climbed in ranks. He was a commander in the Crimean War, where he won outstanding victories at Silistra and Eupatoria and participated in the siege of Sevastopol.
