The battle, a consequence of the siege of Acre during the French Campaign in Egypt and Syria saw the outnumbered French force inflict thousands of casualties. They scattered the remaining forces of the pasha of Damascus, forcing them to abandon their hopes of reconquering Egypt and leaving Napoleon free to carry on the siege of Acre.

GR7BEA Omar Pasha Latas (1806–1871) was an Ottoman general and governor. He was initially an Austrian soldier, but when faced with the charges of embezzlement fled to Ottoman Bosnia and converted to Islam, joined the Ottoman army where he quickly climbed in ranks. He was a commander in the Crimean War, where he won outstanding victories at Silistra and Eupatoria and participated in the siege of Sevastopol.
