ny020323174205 ?The Sassoons? with portraits of dynasty members over the generations including Aline de Rothschild (Lady Sassoon), several of Sybil Sassoon, and two of Sir Philip Sassoon, all by John Singer Sargent at the Jewish Museum in New York, March 1, 2023. The Jewish Museum surveys one of the grandest families of the 19th century: a hemisphere-spanning dynasty of merchants, poets, soldiers and socialites. (Karsten Moran/The New York Times/Fotoarena)

(around 1880-82), at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., on July 19, 2020. At the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the Clark, there are timely new exhibitions, but our critic finds as much relevance in a still life by Manet, or an Ingres drawing. alb3601429 Seventeenth Century Lady. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 36 1/2 x 23 3/4in. (92.7 x 60.3cm). Date: ca. 1895.A consummate eclectic, Chase borrowed freely from old masters such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Diego Velázquez, and from contemporaries such as Édouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and John Singer Sargent. Here, he refers in the title of his painting to tradition, but shows a woman dressed in modern attire. She is seen from behind in a dark, ambiguous setting that is pierced by a sliver of light that suggests a slightly opened door. Uninterested in his model's particular identity, Chase calls attention to her gown, which he describes with expressive brushwork and subtle tones of white. Chase had painted a full-length portrait of his wife entitled Lady in White (1894; private collection), of which a critic observed when it appeared at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: "It is little more than a study of a white satin dress against a dark background, for her face is turned from the spectator." The same could be said for this painting. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3649560 Escutcheon of Charles V of Spain. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 12 x 18 in. (30.5 x 45.7 cm). Date: 1912.Sargent translates a monochromatic subject--a carved stone relief--into a dazzling study of saturated golden light on pale stone. The composition was thoroughly planned in a graphite underdrawing, which Sargent then obscured with his seemingly effortless, free application of pigment. The escutcheon represents the heraldic insignia of Emperor Charles V of Spain. It is located on a fountain on the exterior fortification walls of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, where Sargent painted in 1912. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3682785 Lady with the Rose (Charlotte Louise Burckhardt). Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 84 x 44 3/4 in. (213.4 x 113.7 cm). Date: 1882.Sargent's sitter for this portrait was the twenty-year-old daughter of a Swiss merchant and his American wife, members of the artist's cosmopolitan circle in Paris. The monochromatic palette, shallow space, and emphasis on the figure's silhouette pay tribute to the Spanish master Diego Velázquez, whose work Sargent's Parisian teacher, Carolus-Duran, had encouraged him to study. Sargent exhibited the portrait to great acclaim at the Paris Salon of 1882. In the words of the novelist Henry James, it offered "the slightly 'uncanny' spectacle of a talent which on the very threshold of its career has nothing more to learn.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(243.2 x 143.8 x 12.7 cm). Date: 1883-84.Madame Pierre Gautreau (the Louisiana-born Virginie Amélie Avegno; 1859-1915) was known in Paris for her artful appearance. Sargent hoped to enhance his reputation by painting and exhibiting her portrait. Working without a commission but with his sitter's complicity, he emphasized her daring personal style, showing the right strap of her gown slipping from her shoulder. At the Salon of 1884, the portrait received more ridicule than praise. Sargent repainted the shoulder strap and kept the work for over thirty years. When, eventually, he sold it to the Metropolitan, he commented, "I suppose it is the best thing I have done," but asked that the Museum disguise the sitter's name. alb3666567 Carmencita. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 69 7/8 x 40 7/8 in. ( 177.5 x 103.8 cm). Date: 1890.Carmencita, the dancer known as the "Pearl of Seville," was born in 1868 in Almería, on the southeastern coast of Spain, and became famous in her home country and in France during the 1880s. After she made her New York debut in 1889 at Niblo's Garden, she was besieged with requests for private performances. John Singer Sargent arranged for her to perform in Chase's studio on the evening of April 1, 1890. Afterward, Chase painted this lively portrait of the dancer, in which he suggested the audience's enthusiasm by including the gold bracelet and flowers they had tossed at her feet. Sargent's own portrait of Carmencita (also 1890) is in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1915.During the summer of 1914, Sargent and some friends visited the Austrian Tyrol. Austria's declaration of war on Serbia in July marred the summer's tranquility. "Tyrolese Interior" was probably painted in or near Sankt Lorenzen, in an old castle that had long since been transformed into farmers' quarters. It shows a peasant family at their midday meal against a background filled with religious objects. When the delivery of ten watercolors Sargent sold to the Metropolitan in 1915 was delayed by the danger of transatlantic shipping, he offered to add to the lot this work, which he called "the best oil picture I did in Tirol [sic] last summer.". Date: 1895.As part of a renewed interest in lithography around 1895, the printer Frederick Goulding experimented with new transfer methods that freed artists from the need to work directly on unwieldy printing stones. Sargent made this drawing on laid paper, and a photo-chemical process was then used to transfer the image to a stone, possibly by means of an intermediate negative. The Museum possesses two copies of the resulting lithograph (50.558.1, .2) and when those prints are compared to the present work, it becomes evident that the printer made numerous small corrections in the stone, removing stray lines near the left cheek and elsewhere around the form, and reducing the texture in light open areas. Date: 1918.The prolific Sargent made dozens of sketches and watercolors during his time at the Western Front as an official war artist for Britain. His subjects ranged from the horrific effects of modern chemical warfare to more intimate watercolors, which document the ruin and chaos of war and vignettes of daily life. Mules would have been a common sight at the front. Because of their strength and ability to maneuver difficult terrain they were widely used to transport troops, provisions, and artillery. Here Sargent avoids overt references to war but hints at the difficult conditions by depicting the mules' hooves immersed in deep mud. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3670847 Two Girls with Parasols. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 29 1/2 x 25 in. (74.9 x 63.5 cm). Date: 1888.Beginning in 1885, Sargent often visited Claude Monet at his home in the French village of Giverny, and he was inspired, over the next few years, to create Impressionist landscapes, boating scenes, and figure subjects. This unfinished canvas, which he painted at Calcot Mill in England's Berkshire countryside, reflects the French master's influence. It depicts the artist's sister Violet, in the foreground, and a friend during a walk in the country. Sargent's spontaneous technique and rapid brushwork are evident in the summary rendering of faces and forms and the fleeting effects of dappled light. Date: 1895.In October 1895, Galerie Rapp in Paris organized one section of a large exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts that marked the hundredth anniversary of the invention of lithography by Aloys Senefelder. The British printer Frederick Goulding, who had developed an improved transfer paper for lithography, was involved in the show, and he encouraged Sargent and other London artists to participate, even offering to supply them with materials and print their work. Sargent eventually sent one print to the exhibition, after first creating a group of six, now rare and little-known, compositions. This transfer lithograph is likely his earliest, since its style and execution are closest to the artist's studio studies of the period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
